SALT CREEK — Three women ran more than 100 miles and roughly $7,000 was raised for local charities in the first Salt Creek 24 event held at the Salt Creek County Recreation Area this weekend.
The event was a 24-hour race Saturday and Sunday with 16 individuals going for more than 23 hours on a 1.34-mile lap around the park.
The top runner was Kseniya Klos, 35, of Redmond, who went 105.86 miles in 23 hours, 47 minutes and 48 seconds. Janelle Stark, 36, of Seattle went 103.18 miles and Tabatha Collins, 51, of Bremerton, went 100.5 miles.
The event was put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports.
“It was amazing to watch,” said Peninsula Adventure Sports race director Brittany Shrout.
The top relay team also went over 100 miles. The Girls On the Run Westsound Solem went 23:53.45 and ran 119.26 miles. Second place was the Suns Out Buns Out, which ran 23:50.52 and put in 93.8 miles.
Eight relay teams and 52 individuals participated in the race.
There was also a “Last Runner Standing” event in which runners climbed more than 1,000 vertical feet on a trail to the top of nearby Striped Peak, then returned to the trailhead until only one runner could keep going.
The winner was Scott Martin of Portland, Ore. Martin went 13 hours of climbing Striped Peak to win the Last Runner Standing crown.
The event was a fundraiser for the North Olympic Land Trust, 4 PA, Ainsley’s Angeles Westsound Chapter, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Girls on the Run Westsound. Mittmann said more than $7,000 was raised including $6,500 already collected and another $500 in pledges.
The title sponsor was Welly’s Ice Cream and the presenting sponsor was Olympus Plumbing.
