SAILING: Port Angeles Sea Scouts qualify for Boston race

PORT ANGELES — Sea Scout sailors from Port Angeles, Seattle, Port Orchard and Portland came together to compete on the waters of Port Angeles Harbor.

The occaision was the first Kelly Cup Regatta hosted by the Sea Scout Ship Marvin Shields and the Port Angeles Yacht Club. During the event, experienced sailors and beginners were able to get out on the water for a day of small sailboat racing.

“I really liked seeing some of the newer Sea Scouts learning about sailing and getting on the water for the first time,” says Jared Minard, the skipper of the SSS Marvin Shields.

Port Angeles High School sailing team members Ozzy Minard and Ella Schultz claimed top honors with a first-place finish on the water.

“It felt pretty good to be able to apply the skills we have been learning on the high school sailing team,” Schultz said.” It was a good competition and this win feels great.”

Since the Kelly Cup is a regional qualifier for the National Koch Cup competition, Minard and Schultz also earned an opportunity to sail in the 2022 Koch Cup this summer in Boston.

Sea Scouts is a co-ed program for youth ages 14-21.

The SSS Marvin Shields group meets weekly Wednesdays at the Port Angeles Yacht Club, 1305 Marine Drive, at 6:30 p.m.
