RUN THE PENINSULA: More than 450 run through the gloaming in Blyn

BLYN — More than 450 runners were treated to a pleasant evening and beautiful Christmas lights at the Jamestown tribal campus in the annual Jamestown Glow 5K and 10K Run Saturday afternoon and evening between Blyn and Sequim.

A total of 315 runners took on the 5K course and another 139 competed in the 10K, which took place largely after dusk.

It is the final race of the year out of the five Run the Peninsula events. The Elwha Bridge Run, the Sequim Railroad Bridge Run, the North Olympic Discovery Marathon between Blyn and Port Angeles in June and the Larry Scott Trail Run in Port Townsend are all part of the Run the Peninsula series.

The races are put on by the Port Angeles Marathon Association with title sponsors Peninsula Daily News and the Sequim Gazette, and presenting sponsors Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and Olympic Medical Center. Proceeds from the event go to several organizations, including the Peninsula Trails Coalition, which builds and maintains the Olympic Discovery Trail.

There were several familiar names among the winners. Port Townsend City Manager John Mauro, a repeat winner of Run the Peninsula event, won the 10K with a time of 36 minutes, 3.95 seconds. Natalie Oathout of Silverdale won the women’s 10K with a time of 41:29.41.

In the 5K, youngsters took the top 11 spots. Noah Isenberg, 15, of Port Townsend won the men’s 5K in a time of 1:35.25, while Eleanor Jones of Sequim, just 11 and a repeat winner, won the women’s 5K in a time of 19:56.10. Her mother Laura Gould of Sequim was second in the 10K.

How good was Jones’ time? She was seventh overall, three years younger than any of the other top runners. And in second place for the women (21:52.21) two minutes behind her was Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, 17, a state gold medal track and field winner in the 4×400 relay.

The Run the Peninsula series concluded for 2023 and will return in February with the Elwha Bridge Run.
