ROWING: OPRA’s Disque takes first at American Lake regatta

LAKEWOOD — The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association’s Cooper Disque won first place Sunday in the under 17 single division the American Lake Fall Classic.

Disque is a sophomore at Port Angeles High School.

“Cooper shows up to work every day at practice and puts his complete effort into it, as well as generously helping with the elementary kids during his off days, so it is gratifying to see that commitment pay off,” said OPRA head coach Sean Halberg.

Disque beat 11 other rowers from Oregon and Washington with a time of 22 minutes, 21 seconds. He finished 22 seconds ahead of the second-place rower.

In the day’s other event for OPRA, a boat made up of middle schoolers Hattie Peterson, Peyton Acker, Mariah Disque and freshman Kadence Greul finished 10th, competing against high school rowers in the girls JV 4x division.

“It’s a good experience and eye-opening to be able to go to Tacoma and participate in an event with a thousand other kids throughout the northwest, but it’s more fun to be able to compete in the appropriate age group.” Halberg said. “We need a few more middle schoolers on our team to be able to compete in the Under 15 and Under 16 divisions.”
