SEATTLE — Two rowers from the North Olympic Peninsula will compete in the Head of the Lake Regatta on Lake Union and Lake Washington on Sunday.
The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association’s Elise Beuke of Sequim High School and Aubree Officer of Port Angeles High School will compete in the Women’s Junior 2x race set for 10:38 a.m. Sunday.
The pair are coming off a commanding win in that event at the Tail of the Lake Regatta on Lake Union earlier this month.
Beuke, the stroke, and Officer, the bow, finished the 4-kilometer race in 16 minutes, 43.9 seconds. Their nearest competitor, one of Seattle Rowing Center’s crews, came in with a time of 16:58.4.
Nineteen entries are expected for this race including Brentwood College School, Burnaby Lake Rowing Club, Lake Washington Rowing Club, Olympia Area Rowing Association (two entries), Seattle Rowing Center (six entries), Union Bay Rowing Club, University of the Fraser Valley (two entries), Vashon Island Rowing Club, Victoria City Rowing Club and Whatcom Rowing Association.
Hosted by Lake Washington Rowing Club and the University of Washington, this year’s regatta starts on Lake Union, continues east in the shadow of Husky Stadium through the Montlake Cut and finishes near the Huskies’ rowing program’s Conibear Shellhouse on Lake Washington.
Total distance covered by rowers is 4,800 meters — or about 3 miles.
Established in 1981, Seattle’s Head of the Lake is the largest fall regatta on the West Coast.
In total, 447 competitors representing 76 rowing clubs from across the West Coast and as far away as Rhode Island and Virginia.
The Rat Island Rowing and Sculling Club of Port Townsend will have seven entries with 33 participants.
Men’s and women’s collegiate-level races are set to open the event beginning at 8 a.m.
