PORT ANGELES — Port Scandalous Roller Derby hopes to continue its forward momentum when its Intense City Rollers squad participates in the organization’s first Women’s Flat Track Derby Association-sponsored competition.
That competition, the Wild West Showdown, will be held from Friday through Sunday at the Kitsap Sun Pavillion at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton.
Throw away the notion of roller derby bouts being fixed or the action being scripted like professional wrestling.
“This is a physical, full-contact sport where rules are enforced, it’s no WWE,” team member Holly Botts said.
Membership approval to join the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association came in September for Port Scandalous, after it completed a two-year apprenticeship program that required the group to prove its worth to the association by hosting mock bouts, following specific practice rules and sticking to guidelines for team and event promotion.
All that hard work pays off Friday at 5:15 p.m. when Port Scandalous’ Intense City Rollers face the Lava City Roller Girls of Bend, Ore.
Intense City will face Slaughterhouse Derby Girls of Greeley, Colo. at 4 p.m. Saturday and wrap the event with a bout against the FoCo Girls Gone Derby of Fort Collins, Colo. at 2:15 p.m. Sunday.
All Wild West Showdown bouts will be live streamed online at www.wftda.tv.
The Showdown provides Port Scandalous with a chance to break into the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s Division II rankings.
Teams are awarded points for each game played based on a formula that incorporates opponent strength, points scored and the type of game played (tournament or regular season).
The formula rewards good performances against stronger teams. The teams earn ranking points based on their ratio of the total final game score.
“Our goal is to win by a lot of points to give us a ranking, and once we are ranked it will make teams want to plays us in order to improve their own rankings,” Botts said.
Doors open for the event at 3:30 p.m. Friday, and 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

A weekend pass is $36; Friday’s action is $11 and Saturday and Sunday’s bouts are $16 per day.
Port Scandalous will hold a Not Your Mama’s Bunco game at the Port Angeles Eagles Aerie on Saturday, March 15, to raise funds for their April trip to the Spudtown Knockdown tournament in Boise, Idaho.

Port Scandalous’ next home bout will be held at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 22.
This event will include a beer and wine garden for those 21 and older.
Boys & Girls club members will run the concession stand, raising funds for club activities.
