QUILCENE OYSTER RUN: It was a ‘dino’-mite time for all

QUILCENE — Nearly 200 runners competed this Sunday in the Quilcene Oyster races in and around the Quilcene community, with a trio of dinosaurs showing up to get in the action.

Winning the 10K was Lucy Wait of Port Angeles in a time of 46 minutes, 9.4 seconds. Women took the top four positions in the 10K with the top male runner Oscar Antillon of Port Ludlow at 50:24.8.

The winner of the 5K was Nolan Butler of Port Orchard in a time of 21:21.9. The women’s winner in the 5K was Sequim cross-country runner Dawn Hulstedt, who came in third in the women ‘s three-mile run at the Salt Creek Invitational the day before. Her time was 23:14.4 and she was second overall.

Winning the half-marathon was Daniel Larios of Poulsbo in a time of 1:40.29.0. The top women’s half-marathon was Amber Kuehl of Bremerton with a time of 1:42.11.9, good for second overall. A Canadian runner, Sabastien Hoffmann-Monker of Port Coquitlam, finished third in the half-marathon with a time of 1:45:15.0.

The most interesting entries were Geremy Jenkin, 16-year-old Robin Jenkin and 11-year-old N. Jenkin, who all ran the 5K in dinosaur costumes. The Bremerton family members all managed to finish despite the bulky outfits.

A total of 83 participants ran in the 5K, 56 in the 10K and 46 in the half-marathon.

The next major running event on the Olympic Peninsula is the Larry Scott Trail Run in Port Townsend on Oct. 14. That race is part of the Run the Peninsula series.
