PORT ANGELES — Prep sports are transitioning into the postseason in earnest this week and next.
Here’s a breakdown of where boys soccer and baseball stands as the playoffs begin for those sports on Saturday.
Boys Soccer
Peninsula College’s investments in Wally Sigmar Field have paid off for Sequim and Port Angeles which have earned home games in the Class 2A West Central District Tournament.
The turf field has previously hosted Port Townsend boys soccer playoff contests in the past — artificial turf typically a district and WIAA requirement to literally ensure an even playing field for postseason events.
Adding lights and grandstands has allowed the field to host evening playoff games.
• Sequim will be the beneficiary Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. when the Olympic League-champion Wolves (12-0-0, 14-0-2) host the winner of Saturday’s Washington-River Ridge contest with a state playoff berth on the line.
• The Roughriders (9-3-0, 11-3-0), who earned a home playoff game by virtue of a second-place league finish, face Foster (6-5-4) in a loser-out game on Saturday at noon at Sigmar Field.
A Port Angeles win moves the Riders into the double-elimination portion of the tournament bracket and a visit to play Franklin Pierce (14-5-0) on the Cardinals’ home field at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
• Out in Forks, the Evergreen League-champion Spartans (11-3-0) will host the Trico No. 4, either La Center (7-8-0) or Stevenson (5-7-0), on the turf at Spartan Stadium at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Forks is two Southwest District 4 tournament wins away from its third ever state tournament appearance and first state trip since the 2009 season.
The Spartans wrap the regular season tonight at 7 p.m. against Elma.
• Port Townsend (5-5-2) has a loser-out, Class 1A West Central District playoff match against Nisqually No. 3 Charles Wright Academy (7-5-1) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Curtis High School in University Place.
A Redhawks victory moves Port Townsend into a match at Nisqually No. 1 Vashon on Tuesday.
Baseball
All five North Olympic Peninsula baseball teams will play in the postseason.
• Ninth-seeded Sequim (12-7) faces No. 8 seed Orting (12-8) in the Class 2A West Central District Tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.
If the Wolves win that one, they’ll play the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Fife, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. A loss against Orting and Sequim will hit the road for a loser-out game Wednesday.
• Olympic League-champion Port Angeles (16-4) earned a first-round bye and the No. 2 overall district seed.
The Roughriders will play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Gene Lobe Field at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton against the winner of Saturday’s No. 10 Eatonville (11-9) vs. No. 7 Steilacoom (11-8) matchup.
A win assures Port Angeles of a state playoff berth and a district semifinal contest back in Kitsap on Saturday, May 11.
• Chimacum (8-9) won the Olympic League 1A Division with two close wins over Klahowya.
The Cowboys reward is avoiding a loser-out district play-in game.
Chimacum will face Nisqually League runner-up Seattle Christian (12-4) at Curtis High School in University Place at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The Cowboys edged the Warriors 2-1 in a loser-out district game last season.
A win in that game puts the Cowboys in the district title game back at Curtis on Thursday at 4 p.m. A loss Tuesday and Chimacum will face a loser-out game at Foss High School in Tacoma at 4 p.m. Thursday.
• Forks (6-11) will face Trico League champ Columbia (White Salmon) (14-4) in the double-elimination Southwest District 4 Tournament on Monday.
That game will be held at Castle Rock High School at 4 p.m.
If the Spartans win or lose, they’ll be playing either King’s Way Christian or Hoquiam at 4 p.m. Tuesday at a to-be-determined location.
• Quilcene (6-8) rallied to win its final three SeaTac League games to make the Class 1B Bi-District Tournament.
The Rangers will head south to face the Southwest District 4 No. 2 team on the road at a to-be-determined time on Tuesday in a loser-out contest.
