PREPS: Roughrider netters sweep rivals

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles boys tennis earned its second win of the season over rival Sequim in a 7-0 sweep.

The Riders swept the doubles matches without giving up a set, but a couple of singles matches were closely contended.

Port Angeles Sky Gelder at No. 2 and Garret Buerer at No. went the full three sets in a couple of epic, long matches vs. Lincoln Bear and Mason Rapelje.

“Those singles matches could’ve gone either way and we were fortunate to get them both,” said Riders coach Brian Gundersen.

Girls Soccer Bainbridge 5, Port Angeles 1

PORT ANGELES — The scoreboard looked lopsided for Port Angeles girls soccer in a 5-1 loss to Olympic League-leading Bainbridge but the Roughriders felt much better about this performance than a 4-0 loss to the Spartans in September.

“It felt better than that which is good for us,” coach Daniel Horton said.

Horton said many of his younger players were timid in the first matchup with Bainbridge.

That first game a sense of being timid, we were playing like we were playing

“It was much different,” Horton said. “We had tons of communication, we were winning 50/50 balls, getting the ball out of the air, getting the ball instead of bracing for impact.”

The Riders played well in the first 25 minutes.

“We felt like the game was going to go down to the wire then Bainbridge took advantage and scored two goals in two minutes in the 26th and 28th,” Horton said.

Bainbridge added goals in the 45th on a penalty kick and the 48th before Port Angeles found the net.

Senior Ava-Anne Shehan notched the score, her fourth goal on the season. It was the first goal the Riders have scored in the last three seasons (six matches) against Bainbridge.

“We bumped her out of the defensive line, had her at central midfield and she pushed up and made runs and they turned it over deep in their half at the 18-yard box and she hustled, beat her defender and scored to the left side,” Horton said.
