PREPS: Roughrider golf, softball head into spring break in first place

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles boys golf stayed unbeaten with a 169-231 win over Kingston on Thursday even as their scores dipped as heavy rains from recent storms softened up the fairways and greens of Peninsula Golf Club, limiting distance on drives and approach shots and increasing the difficult of an already tough sport.

Sky Gelder led the way for the Roughriders with a round of 5-over-par 41. Cale Wentz was one shot back for Port Angeles and Austin Worthington, Tate Alton and Max Gagnon all posted rounds of 43.

Kolby Charles finished with a 59 for the Riders.

Port Angeles (4-0) is off for spring break and will visit rival Sequim on April 10.

PORT ANGELES — Autumn Wilson-Rowland was match medalist for the second straight match for the Rider girls, shooting a career-best round of 46 at Peninsula Golf Club on Thursday.

“For as wet as PGC is that is a very good score,” coach Mike DuPuis said. “I’ve been playing golf up here for over 30 years and it is the wettest conditions that I can remember.”

Claire Osterberg shot a 48, Malena Marquez had a 51 and Layla Parker, playing in her first varsity match, shot a 67 as did Izzy Spencer.

Lainey Rudd, also playing in her first match, shot 69.

Softball Port Angeles 4, Olympic 3

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders headed into spring break on a high note, earning a triumph over the Trojans in an early season showdown for first place in the Olympic League at Dry Creek Elementary on Thursday.

Port Angeles plated all four of its runs in the home half of the first inning and were able to hold off the Trojans down the stretch.

Starting pitcher Heidi Leitz scattered eight hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts over five innings to earn the win.

Leitz also got the Riders’ offense going, driving in leadoff hitter Lynzee Reid, who reached via error, with an RBI double.

Abby Kimball, Abby Rudd and Mariah Traband all added RBI singles for Port Angeles.

Reid earned the save, getting out of trouble with Olympic in the top of the seventh by recording three straight outs.

Port Angeles (2-0, 5-1) will host Sequim on April 7. The Wolves’ contest with Bainbridge was rained out on Thursday.
