PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles controlled the paint and were connected offensively in an 87-42 win over East Jefferson in the nonleague boys basketball season opener for each squad.
The Roughriders hauled down 46 rebounds, 21 of them on the offensive glass including nine from post Isaiah Shamp. Shamp had a monster night, scoring 21 points, grabbing 17 rebounds with four steals.
“Isaiah is really good,” coach Kasey Ulin said of his 6-foot-5 junior. “He has great footwork and is a true post, with good hands and a soft touch.
And Port Angeles posted assists on 27 of their 35 made field goals in the contest.
“I was really really happy with the ball movement, the open guy got the ball,” Ulin said. “We were almost too unselfish at times. We preach passing every day, every drill. Nice to see kids catching on. A bit of a lost art in basketball. Skilled players are skilled passers.”
The Riders were led in distribution by a career-high eight assists from junior guard Parker Nickerson. Nickerson led all scorers with 23 points, including four 3-pointers.
“Parker was great, the assists were a career high, so it was nice to see him take over the playmaking reins when [Josiah] Long was out.”
Kason Albaugh also shined off the bench.
“Nine points, five assists, five steals and no turnovers,” Ulin said. “Kason played almost a perfect game stepping in and playing the point when Josiah went out. He could start for a lot of teams.”
Ulin also like Parab Seera and Ezra Townsend’s work on the floor.

Brody Moore led East Jefferson with 10 points.
“They have some length, they can shoot a little bit, have some athleticism and can play physically,” Ulin said of the Rivals. “I think they can compete in the Nisqually League.”
Port Angeles (1-0) hosts Foster today at 3 p.m.
“It’s a perfect game for us against a really athletic team” Ulin said.
East Jefferson hosts North Mason on Monday at Chimacum High School.

PORT ANGELES — Seven Roughriders rolled to a sweep of the Knights on Thursday.
Newcomers Paige Pangaro and Natalie Robinson joined Taylor Worthington, Abby Robinson and Violet Mills to take the first two games while Abby Rudd and Kenadie Ring contributed to the two Baker game victories.
The Roughriders (2-2) scored a game high of 153 from Abby Robinson, while Worthington had a two-game combined high score of 267.
“A highlight of the afternoon was when Kenadie recorded a rare turkey,” coach Becky Gundersen said of Ring’s three consecutive strikes.
The Riders will host a doubleheader with rival Sequim at Laurel Lanes on Monday afternoon.
