ALLYN — Port Angeles senior Piper Williams rallied to claim the Olympic League girls golf low average crown over North Mason’s Mari Morris in the regular season finale at Lakeland Village Golf Course.
The Riders triumphed 216-224 over the Bulldogs to finish 9-1 on the season.
“Piper held a slight lead of 48.8 strokes per round to 49 for Mari going into the last match,” coach Mike DuPuis said. “Piper won by shooting a 44 to Mari’s 49.
Williams had to rally after a slow start in the nine-hole match.
“Piper was actually two shots behind after two holes but made three straight pars,” DuPuis said. “A fourth straight par did a 360-degree around the cup and stayed out.
“Piper did what Piper does when the pressure is on, she handles it like the champion she is. She parred four of the last five holes and just kept the pressure on her opponent. She’s a great competitor and an even better person. She’s the team’s captain and leads by example. We will miss her and her leadership next year as she is our lone senior.”
Mia Neff shot her second-best score of the year, a 54. Malena Marquez had a 58 and Lauryn Chapman shot 60. Claire Osterberg had a 63 and Autumn Wilson-Rowland in her first ever match shot 69.
Port Angeles will compete at the Olympic League Championships on Monday at Kitsap Golf & Country Club.
Boys Golf
Port Angeles 185, North Mason 233
ALLYN — Austin Worthington earned match medalist honors as the Riders closed out a successful regular season with a nine-hole win at par-36 Lakeland Village Golf Course.
Worthington totaled a 45 to edge teammate Edun Bailey (46) by one stroke for low-round honors.
Phoenix Flores and Nate Anderson each shot 47 to round out the Port Angeles scorers. Cale Wentz (48) and Reid Schmidt (51) also teed it up for the Riders (8-1).
“As far as our goals: we were able to beat the two teams we lost to last year, Sequim and Kingston, so we were able to top all the Class 2A teams this year, yet we were unable to beat 3A Bainbridge to claim the Olympic League title for our team,” coach Bob Anderson said. “So we keep working. Our remaining goal for this year as we start the postseason is to get all six of these gents to the state tourney in Spokane.
“I am so proud of these guys. It is an absolute pleasure to work with these kids. It is so much fun. I must add that our whole golf team, boys and girls, also had the highest GPA of all the [Port Angeles] spring sports teams as well. They are great kids on and off the course, and not afraid of the work.”
Sequim 175, Bremerton 193
SEQUIM — Cole Smithson went low, tying his career-best round of 38 to earn match medalist honors and lead the Wolves to a senior night win.
Smithson posted a double bogey on the first hole but played even par for the final eight holes.
“Cole has worked so hard since the last round of state last year, and at times, he has put too much pressure on himself,” coach Sean O’Mera said. “Today, even though he didn’t have his best swing, he found a way. It is such a pleasure to coach a kid that just keeps coming back, despite all obstacles.”
Zack Thompson was next in line with a 44 for the Wolves, Carter Cronin added a 45 and Lars Wiker totaled a 48.
Boys Soccer
Sequim 1, Bremerton 0
BREMERTON — The Wolves bounced back with a road win to snap a two-game losing skid.
“It was one of our better games all around,” coach Juan Carlos Cisneros said. “It was important for us to demonstrate an accurate depiction of who we are.”
Parker Knight found the net for Sequim, assisted by James Mason.
Nolan Valenzuela picked up the shutout in goal for the Wolves (4-9-0).
Sequim hosts Kingston at 6:45 p.m. today.
Bainbridge 10, Port Angeles 0
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic League-champion Spartans hung four first-half goals on the Riders’ first string, but it took some time to find the scoreboard.
“It took them 25 minutes to break the Port Angeles defense down,” coach Chris Saari said.
Saari said the Riders played their second team squad in the second half.
“Caim Valles filled in at left back for Port Angeles in the second half and provided a spark for the Riders,” Saari said. “Zak Alton did a good job of organizing the defense for PA in his first game back from injury.”
Port Angeles (6-6-0, 18 points; 8-6-0) hosts Bremerton (6-7-0, 18 points; 7-7-0) in a senior night contest at 6:45 p.m. today at Wally Sigmar Field at Peninsula College. This match is crucial for the Riders to finish second in the Olympic League among 2A teams.
