BREMERTON — Playing under a steady downpour that triggered some sloppy play at times, Port Angeles dominated the stat lines and ultimately earned a 2-0 girls soccer win over Olympic at Silverdale Stadium.
Tuesday’s victory was the second in a row for the Roughriders (5-3-0), who out-shot the Trojans 17-2.
In spite of that advantage, Port Angeles struggled to consistently put the ball on target, according to coach Scott Moseley.
But the Riders persevered to get two shots in net.
The first goal came in the 13th minute off of a Port Angeles corner kick.
Bailee Larson passed to Anna Petty, who was able to drive a low shot from 18 yards past the Olympic goalie. The goal was Petty’s second of the season.
“The first goal was something we had been working on in practice and it was nice for them to execute it well,” Moseley said.
The Riders had a number of other shots that they couldn’t keep down, including a Larson shot that shook the cross bar after halftime.
Catie Brown and Larson teamed up on a late goal to seal the game, this score also coming off another set play.
“This time, Catie Brown took a Larson corner, passed back to Larson, who curled in a low shot to the far post,” Moseley said.
It was Larson’s team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Moseley also highlighted the defense play of the team’s back four and goalkeeper in earning their fourth shutout of the season and second in a row.
“Defense wins games and they didn’t allow Olympic any good looks at goal,” Moseley said. “Jayde Gedelman had a solid game at right back, both defensively and moving forward to link up with the forwards.”
Third-place Port Angeles hosts second-place North Kitsap tonight at Peninsula College. The Riders will seek revenge for an earlier 1-0 loss to the Vikings.

BREMERTON — Still missing some important pieces from their roster, the Roughriders were swept on the road by the Trojans.
“It was a tough battle, but we just could not overtake the Trojans,” coach Jennifer Reynolds said.
“It was awesome to nearly be back to a full roster and we look forward to next week when we will have everyone back. The past couple weeks have been challenging, but most of all it has been a great opportunity for our younger varsity players to get some time on the court and learn how to work together as a team.”
In Tuesday’s contest, Angelina Sprague totaled five kills and two aces for the Riders, while Zoe Smithson posted five kills, three blocks, nine assists, six digs and served 100 percent.
As a team, Port Angeles served 95 percent.
Lily Halberg also served 100 percent with three aces and led the team with 31 digs plus one kill.
Josephine Edgington served 100 percent with three aces, five digs and five assists.
Emi Halberg and Ava Hairell totaled two kills apiece.
Port Angeles (3-6) hosts North Kitsap tonight at 6 p.m.
