PREPS: Forks wins big on the road as Neel has huge game

SOUTH BEND — Forks’ killer K’s, Keira Johnson and Kyra Neel, combined for 48 points as the Spartans sank South Bend 74-25 in a Pacific League girls basketball game on the road Friday.

Neel posted a career-high 16 points to go along with a monster night on the boards (17 rebounds).

“Kyra had a great game and this was really a big week for her,” coach David Hurn said. “She got sworn into the Navy this week, did some testing and paperwork and showed up in time for the game and dominated.”

Johnson had 32 points and five steals.

“She was super aggressive defensively,” Hurn said.

Hurn said his team had a rough stretch in the second quarter, but he liked how his team answered after halftime.

“We set some expectations and they came out with a much better third quarter.”

Forks (2-0, 2-1) has a big week ahead, starting with a nonleague game with Neah Bay at home Monday.

The Spartans also play league rivals Ilwaco and Raymond next week.

In another Friday night game, Cascade Christian beat East Jefferson 55-34.

JOYCE — Conner Bauers scrapped his way to 14 points to lead the Loggers to a win in a contact-filled contest.

“This game was something to behold, if you liked a lot of physical play and a lot of bodies hitting the floor,” coach Chris Ferrier said.

“It was a good old fashioned defensive battle played at a snails pace. We overcame some adversity and some sickness and showed a lot of grit and resiliency. The first half was a test of who could get the ball in the bucket first and we were able to get enough stops to lead by a couple.

“The third quarter was a little sticky for us, we started fouling a little too much and having issues with their size. Fourth quarter was a gut check and the guys responded with tremendous toughness.”

Ferrier said Bauers spent much of the game getting knocked to the floor and bounced around the court.

“Those were 14 very tough points,” Ferrier said.

“We struggled a bit from the foul line (7 of 17) but also discovered a couple other guys can do good things with the ball.”

Crescent has Coupeville on the schedule on Wednesday.

In another Friday night game, Cascade Christian beat East Jefferson 63-44.
