BREMERTON — Isabella Diaz of Sequim won her weight division at the prestigious Hammerhead Invitational wrestling tournament held this weekend at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion.
The Hammerhead Invite is one of the biggest wrestling tournaments in the state, with 90 boys and girls teams participating. Boys and girls teams from Port Angeles, Sequim and East Jefferson all competed.
Diaz competed in the 120C bracket, getting to the championship bout with a pin and an 8-0 major decision in the semifinals. In the finals, she beat Chloe Marcotte of Central Kitsap in a 6-2 decision.
Willow Harvey of Port Angeles had the second-best showing among Olympic Peninsula girls. She finished second at 130 pounds. She had three straight pins to get to the championship bout. She nearly made it to the end of the championship bout, but was pinned at 5 minutes, 41 seconds by Lavender Bel of Graham-Kapowsin.
Another solid finish was by Raymond Rodriguez in the boys tournament. He finished third at 126 pounds. He made it to the semifinals with two pins and a 4-2 decision. He was pinned in the third round in the semifinals.
All the other local wrestlers who placed were girls.
East Jefferson’s Mi Amada Lanphear finished fourth in the 120-pound division, while Akili Clevenger of East Jefferson was fourth in the 120B division.
The Port Angeles boys were 49th with 47 points, East Jefferson 60th with 36 points and Sequim was 90th with three. Among the girls, the Port Angeles girls were 59th with 37 points, Sequim was 68th with 27 points, all earned by Diaz, and the East Jefferson girls were 72nd with 20 points.
Forks at Rainier
RAINIER — The Forks boys wrestling team wrestled in dual tournament on Friday and took first place defeating Montesano in round one, Seattle Academy in round two, Kelso in round three, and Chief Leschi in round four.
The girls wrestled in an individual tournament also hosted by Rainier on Saturday, coming in second overall behind champion Puyallup.
Larayne Blair took first at 100 pounds while Kansas Jackson also came in first at 235. Natalie Horejsi was second at 115, while Allie Coons was third at 100, Jameson Demorest third at 120, Miley Blanton third at 125 and Riley Tjepkema fourth at 145.
