PREP WRESTLING: Port Townsend’s Cain finishes second at Lynden tournament

LYNDEN — Matt Cain’s second-place finish in the 152-pound weight class paced Port Townsend at a 17-team wrestling tournament this past weekend hosted by Lynden High School.

Port Townsend, the only Class 1A school going up against Class 2A and 3A teams at the competition, finished eighth overall.

Each weight class had a 16-person, double-elimination bracket.

Cain was the only Port Townsend wrestler to make the final round.

“Wrestling a two-time state participant. Matt [Cain] was ahead 4-2 in the second round and was beating up the guy and then got caught and rolled to his back and pinned,” Redskins wrestling coach Stephen Grimm said.

“It was a tough one to swallow for him. He was the better wrestler, but got caught in bad position. Sometimes that happens and you have to learn from it now, so you don’t make that mistake in the state tournament.”

Grimm also praised Jeff Seton (170) who finished third.

“He beat a No. 5 ranked 2A kid [in the consolation final] to win third place,” Grimm said.

Shae Shoop was fifth at 113 for Port Townsend.

Next up for the Redskins is Senior Night against Bremerton on Thursday.
