PREP WRESTLING: Forks girls shine at Hammerhead Invite

BREMERTON — The Forks girls wrestling team had the most impressive showing of the six Olympic Peninsula squads that competed at the prestigious Hammerhead Invitational.

A total of 99 teams competed at the Hammerhead Invitational, which included a number of 4A and 3A schools and teams from Oregon and Utah.

The Forks girls finished with 70.5 points, 45th overall and 16th among the 42 girls’ teams, despite being a 2B school.

Leading the way for Forks was Kinley Rondeau at 105 pounds, who finished fourth at 105 pounds. She won her opening match with a pin, then lost her second match, putting her in the consolation bracket. She then won three straight, all by pin before falling in the third-place match with a medical forfeit. She finished 4-2 on the day and scored 24 points.

Forks’ Peyton Johnson and Riley Tjepkema both made it to the semifinals of their weight classes and ended up placing.

Johnson won three straight matches at 125 pounds, with two pins and a 15-0 technical fall. She lost in a 12-0 major decision in the semifinals then won her fifth-place match with a forfeit. She went 4-2 on the day and scored 18.5 points.

Tjepkema also won three straight at 140 pounds to get into the semis, where she was pinned. She lost her fifth-place match with a medical forfeit to finish sixth. She went 3-3 on the day and earned 13 points.

Flora Horejsi won two matches at 110 pounds and LaRayne Blair won two at 130 pounds, both scoring points for the Spartans.

Rondeau, Johnson and Tjepkema were the only Olympic Peninsula wrestlers who placed at the Hammerhead Invite, though numerous other wrestlers had a good weekend, winning multiple matches and earning points.

Forks boys

Abraham Montealegre earned 12 points for the Spartans, going 2-2 on the weekend. Dominick Sanchez at 113 pounds earned nine points with three wins and two losses.

Jon Parker Jr. earned nine points by going 3-2 during the weekend.

Braden Camacho-Roldan went 2-2 in the tournament at 132 pounds.

Sequim

The Sequim boys had a good showing with 47.5 points with seven wrestlers earning points.

Jaymes Vilona led the way with 9-.5 points with a 3-2 record on the weekend. Max Silvilli at 285 earned eight points with a victory.

Brandon Bair (106 pounds) and Ryan Spelker (132) each scored seven points. Bair went 2-2 during the weekend while Spelker went 3-2. Dylan Bowen at 215 went 2-2 and earned 5.5 points, while Johnny Vilona at 138 pounds won a match for 3.5 points. For the Sequim girls, Bailey Stein at 125 pounds went 2-2 over the weekend and gained six points.

East Jefferson

The East Jefferson boys had several solid showings. Leading the way was Ethan Perovich at 175 with a 3-2 record over the weekend for 11 points. Grady White at 150 pounds had 10 points with a 3-2 record.

Aidan Powell at 285 earned nine points with a 2-2 record in four matches.

The Rivals had several wrestlers with eight points. Manaseh Lanphear Ramirez at 150 pounds went 3-2 over the weekend, Rylen Kruse at 165 went 3-2 and Mason Iverson at 215 went 2-2.

East Jefferson girls

For the East Jefferson girls, Savvy Grimm at 105 had the top showing, going 2-2 on the day with one of her losses to Forks’ Rondeau. She earned 11 points.

Gracee Liske at 120 pounds made it to the quarterfinals, winning two straight. She finished 2-2 over the weekend for eight points. Eliana Anderson at 130 won a match and earned eight points and Ursula Schmidt at 155 won a match for six points.
