PREP VOLLEYBALL: Sequim sweeps Port Angeles; Quilcene continues dominating start

SEQUIM — Sequim overcame a Port Angeles comeback effort and earned a three-set Rainshadow Rumble rivalry sweep 25-20, 25-14, 25-23.

“[We] played hard with a lot of energy,” Roughriders coach Christine Halberg said of Thursday’s match.

Port Angeles held leads on four different occasions in the first set, but the Wolves forged ahead with a five-point run to take the lead.

“[We] never gave up,” Halberg said.

“In Game 3 we were down 23-16 after Sequim went on a nine-point run. Then Kiana Robideau went back to serve for seven straight points and tied it up 23-23.

Despite the three-set loss, Halberg said the match could be a confidence builder for the Roughriders.

“Even though we lost the third game, the girls proved to themselves that they can always come back if they set their mind to it,” Halberg said.

“We set some goals tonight and achieved some of them and we were successful. They played well with a new rotation tonight, which isn’t always easy.”

“Callie Hall did a great job stepping up as setter. Emily Johnson went from setter to outside hitter and led the team with five kills and was second with five aces.”

Alyssa Sweet added seven digs, one kill and three aces for Port Angeles. Brennan Gray led the team with 11 digs.

Quilcene 3, Shorewood Christian 0

QUILCENE — The Rangers have yet to concede a set on the season after a 25-7, 25-15, 25-6 sweep of the Lions in SeaTac League volleyball action.

“This was our second league game and [we] played well,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said of Thursday’s match.

“We had strong hitting and defense tonight.

“Our serving was very strong in the first and third game, but we had a little bit of a slump in the second game, missing six serves.”

Emily Hitt was perfect on serve, going 12 for 12 with an ace. She also totaled nine kills, five digs and two blocks for Quilcene, while Katie Love added nine kills and a dig.

Crowell said Hitt and Love showed “a lot of power and promise in those outside positions.”

Megan Weller was 16 of 19 serving with six aces, four kills and six digs.

“Alex Johnsen was very strong, digging up 15 hits and having an excellent serve-receive with 18 perfect passes,” Crowell said.

Quilcene (2-0, 6-0) visits Muckleshoot (0-4, 0-5) on Tuesday.
