PREP VOLLEYBALL: Sequim sweeps PA in volleyball

PORT ANGELES — Taking on rival Port Angeles for the second time this season, the Sequim volleyball team wanted to get into a groove ahead of a crucial showdown for second place tonight against North Kitsap.

The Wolves managed that, for the most part, coming from behind in the third set to secure a three-set sweep in a 25-12, 25-12, 25-20 Rainshadow Rumble rivalry win over the Roughriders.

“We played all right except for the third game when we got behind 12-3,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said. “In the third game, we chipped away at it and got it to 20-18 and our setter Kenzi Berglund started serving and she finished out the game with a seven-point serving run, two of them aces. We had one of our best-hitting lineups at the net and we caught up, passed them and won.”

“We knew we played NK [tonight] and that’s a big match for the second seed to districts, so we wanted to play well.”

The Wolves posted their highest serving percentage of the season, 95 percent, against the Riders.

Berglund led Sequim from the service line, sending in 24-of-25 serves with four aces, two kills, 26 assists and two stuff blocks.

Arianna Stovall led the offense and the defense with 12 kills and five blocks. Brianna Palenik added six kills and went 6-of-6 with an ace on serves, and Kassi Montero also served 15-of-16 with a pair of aces and a pair of kills.

Rose Gibson also served well, sending in 13-of-14 serves with an ace, three perfect passes, five kills and eight digs.

Sydney Clark also chipped in with four kills and served 4-for-5 with an ace.

Sequim (9-3, 9-4) visits North Kitsap (10-2, 11-3) tonight.

Port Angeles (1-11, 1-12) visits Bremerton tonight. The Riders beat the Knights earlier this year.
