PREP VOLLEYBALL: Sequim stays in thick of playoff chase

KINGSTON — Sequim expected to play a grueling, five-set volleyball match, similar to a number of matches between the two evenly matched programs in recent years.

Instead, the Wolves came home with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 Olympic League sweep of the Buccaneers.

“They kind of fell apart a little bit after the first game,” Sequim coach Jennie Weber Heilman said of Kingston. “They opened the match with four points in a row to start it off, and it was like, ‘Oh, here we go again.’ But we traded the lead back and forth and used some good serving runs in the second and third sets.”

Jordan Kidd and Sydney Hegtvedt rattled off four-point runs in the second set while the Wolves put up five points in a row while Sydney Clark set the table in the third set.

“Sydney Clark was our serving machine,” Weber Heilman said. “She served 17 for 18 with two aces, 13 assists and three digs.”

Kendall Hastings also fared well, leading Sequim with 13 kills, while also serving 10 of 11 with two aces, six perfect passes, five stuff blocks and 10 digs.

“It was awesome to see our team come together and feed off each other’s positive energy,” Angel Wagner said.

Wagner had three kills, an ace, a stuff block and three digs.

Jolene Vaara had six kills, served 8 for 9 with an ace, seven assists a stuff block and 12 digs.

Sequim (5-2, 5-3) hosts North Mason tonight.

Port Angeles 3, Bremerton 0

BREMERTON — The Roughriders racked up 20 service aces in a 25-9, 25-10, 25-17 sweep of the Knights on the road Tuesday.

Cindy Liang served 15 of 16 with a team-high five aces, while also adding nine digs and a kill for Port Angeles.

Teammates Alexis Perry added four aces, two digs and a kill, while Lily Halberg led the Riders with four kills and added two aces.

Ava Hairell chipped in with three kills.

Third-place Port Angeles (5-2, 5-3) hosts second-place Kingston (5-2, 5-3) tonight.
