SEQUIM — Sequim overcame its own small roster and a second-set serving “meltdown” to get past Kingston 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23) in an Olympic League volleyball match Tuesday at Sequim High School.
“We were missing a player due to injury, and they were down a couple of players, so the benches were a little bare for the varsity match,” Wolves coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.
Kingston and Sequim have played a number of close matches in recent seasons.
“We usually have close matches with Kingston,” Webber Heilman said.
Apart from the initial set, that’s what transpired again as the Wolves rebounded from a poor showing at the service line in set two.
“They just were like, ‘OK, we can’t do that again,’ ” Webber Heilman said of her team in the post-set huddle. “We keep track of missed first serves, and we had three in that game. So we just needed to get the ball into play. We just needed to get it on the court and not worry about speed. And the third game, we didn’t miss any, and none in the fourth.”
Sequim’s Jolene Vaara led the offensive attack with 11 kills and served 11 for 12 with three aces and three perfect passes, while Kendall Hastings added seven kills, four blocks and three aces.
Jordan Hegtvedt served a perfect 18 for 18 with two aces and added 20 digs and six perfect passes for the Wolves, while Lindsay Swanson posted five perfect passes, four digs, two kills and an ace.
Malorey Morey tallied three kills, five blocks and served 10 for 10 with two perfect passes.
Angel Wagner served 14 for 16 with four aces and two kills in her first varsity match.
Sequim (5-2) visits Port Angeles (2-3) on Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders carried the momentum of a strong performance at the Monarch Challenge over the weekend into Olympic League play, sweeping past the Knights 25-11, 25-14 and 25-20.
“It was a great game,” Port Angeles coach Jennifer Reynolds said. “We have a few players out with injuries, so it was an opportunity to get some of our younger teammates out there and see what they could do. They didn’t disappoint and we came away with the win.”
The Riders were missing starters Emi Halberg and Kennedy Bruch in Tuesday’s win.
Port Angeles still managed to serve 92 percent with 17 aces.
Zoe Smithson led the Riders with six kills and added four digs, a service ace and a block.
Lily Halberg totaled five kills, two aces and 10 digs.
Cindy Liang led the Riders with seven aces offensively and 17 digs defensively.
Angelina Sprague chipped in with three kills offensively.
Port Angeles (2-3) visits Kingston today.

FORKS — The Spartans swept past the Wolverines 25-19, 25-12, 25-20 to get back on the winning track in the Class 2B Pacific League.
Kyra Neel led Forks with nine kills and seven aces, while Kadie Wood put down six kills and four aces.
Kaidence Rigby totaled three kills and three aces, and freshman setter Erika Williams had 12 assists and six aces.
“It was awesome for them to get the win in three games,” coach Jenn LeDuke said. “We started off really strong and then relaxed. Erika is becoming stronger each game with setting her first year. Kyra and Kadie were really strong on the outside with their hits. Eladia [Hernandez] played well with a lot of big digs and saves to keep plays alive.
“I can’t wait for them to play with [more] confidence,” LeDuke said.
The Spartans (2-1) visit Ocosta tonight.
