SEQUIM — Playing in a unique senior night, the Sequim volleyball team kept itself in contention for an Olympic League 2A title with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-17) win over Klahowya.
The win improves the Wolves’ record to 7-1 in the North Conference of the Olympic 2A League.
Coach Jennie Webber Heilman said it was a special senior night because for much of the year, the volleyball girls weren’t sure if they would get the chance to play any sports at all during their senior season.
“It was senior night, which was nice. We were able to celebrate with parents and grandparents. They’re getting to celebrate a few things,” Webber Heilman said.
Lindsay Swanson had a spectacular match, serving 19-for-20 with 11 aces. Webber Heilman said Swanson had an eight-point run with six aces in the first game, then followed that up with a six-point run with four aces.
“She got on a roll,” Webber Heilman said.
For the match, the Wolves served 88 percent, lower than the 90 percent Webber Heilman wants, but they did have 17 total aces.
Front-line hitter Kendall Hastings had five aces.
“She doesn’t serve a lot but we might have her serve more,” Webber Heilman said. Hastings added 10 kills and four blocks.
Setter Kalli Wicker had 23 assists and served 8-for-9, Jayla Julmist came back to the team and added six kills, McKenna Hastings served 9-for-9 with five digs, Amanda Weller had four kills and four digs, Jessica Asselin had six digs, Morey Malory had four kills, and Ali Gale 10 digs. Jordan Hegtvedt added 12 digs.
Webber Heilman said the Kingston match coming up tonight on the road is big. Kingston is the only team in the North Conference to beat Sequim, 3-2 early in the season. If Sequim can win, the Wolves can claim a co-championship with Kingston to tap off this unusual season. Sequim would have to finish with a win over Olympic March 17.
Forks 3, Ocosta 1
OCOSTA — The Forks volleyball team bounced back from a third game loss and a deficit in Game 4 to beat Ocosta on the road Monday.
Down 22-19 in the fourth game, Kyra Neel served two clutch aces for the Spartans. “Kadience Rigby had a great save to keep it in play for Kyra to finish out the set for the win,” said coach Jenn LeDuke.
Kray Horton served 24-for-24 with two aces. She added 11 assists as a setter. LeDuke said Kadie Wood covered the court well with four kills.
Neel finished with eight kills and three total aces, while Kesia Rowley had seven kills and 11 aces. Colbie had five aces and served 100 percent.
“It was an awesome group effort tonight to get the win,” LeDuke said.
Forks plays at 7 p.m. today at home against Chief Leschi.
