SEQUIM — The Sequim volleyball team played Bainbridge tough early, but the Spartans showed why they are undefeated and ranked No. 6 in the state, going on to win 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-13).
“We wanted to at least take a game from them,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.
“We played well in that first game, but we also missed four serves,” Webber-Heilman said. She said the team strives to serve 90 percent and served just 83 percent in this match. She also said the team needs to work on its passing.
“We weren’t getting the ball to our setter,” she said.
The Wolves stayed right with the Spartans early through all three games. The Spartans were effective in closing out Sequim each time. Sequim was down just 15-13 in game one as Bainbridge went 10-6 down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead. Sequim was down 18-13 in game two as Bainbridge closed out 7-4, and the third game was tied 7-7 early as Bainbridge went 18-6 down the stretch to close out the game and match.
Bainbridge, 12-0, has lost one game all year, to 4A South Kitsap.
Rose Gibson led the Wolves with seven kills and eight digs, while Sydney Clark served 4-for-4 with six digs.
Jordan Julmist had four kills and her first two stuff blocks of the year, while Teagan Neathery served 6-for-6 with an ace and a stuff block. Tiffany Lam had seven digs and Kassi Montero five kills, nine digs and a block.
Kenzie Berglund served 7-for-7 with an ace, 13 assists and eight digs, while Sophie Greenleaf had two aces.
Sequim remains solidly in third place in the Olympic League after the loss with a record of 7-3 (8-4 overall). The Wolves play at Olympic (2-7, 2-10) tonight.
Port Angeles 3, Olympic 0
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles volleyball team dispatched Olympic 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-16) to get within one win away from .500 in the Olympic League.
The Roughriders’ Jordin Dunaway led the team with seven kills. She had five digs and a double block. Chloe Clark also had a good match, serving 17-for-18 with six aces and five digs.
Kenzie Moses served a perfect 13-for-13 with three kills and five digs, while Hannah Hairell had a pair of aces, serving 8-for-9 with a double block. London Bourland had three kills, a block and a double block, while Layla Parker served 5-for-5 and had a double block.
Hailey Castor and Kayleigh Sargent split the setting duties, with Castor tallying seven assists and Sargent six.
The victory put Port Angeles’ league record at 4-5 (4-6 overall). The Riders next play tonight at North Kitsap (8-1, 8-3).
South Bend 3, Forks 1
FORKS — The Forks volleyball team lost a close match to South Bend 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23) with three of the games coming down to the wire.
“Last night’s match didn’t go our way in terms of the final score, but there were still a lot of positives to take away from it. As a coach, I saw a lot of growth on the court that we’ve been working hard toward,” said coach Jenn LeDuke.
“Our defense has been a big focus in practice, and it really showed. The players worked hard, moved well, and stayed in the game even when things got tough. Mistakes happened, but what stood out was how players kept their composure. Instead of getting down, they were ready for the next play — a big step forward in mental toughness,” Le Duke said.
Forks (3-1, 6-4) next hosts Chief Leschi (0-4, 4-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Boys Tennis Port Angeles 4, Bremerton 3
BREMERTON — The Port Angeles boys tennis team won two out three singles matches and split the doubles matches in a closely fought 4-3 victory over Bremerton.
No. 2 singles player Grant Butterworth beat Bremerton’s Eric Prewitt 6-0, 6-0, while Owen Leitz beat Mason Pacheco 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles matches, Brett Manson and Gagan Seera won 6-4, 6-0, and Jacob Oberly and Kyler Thompson-Fowler won 6-2, 6-1.
Alik Ross and Abe Brenkman lost their doubles match 6-4, 6-2 and Liam Miller and Jenson Wolfe lost 6-2, 6-4.
Port Angeles (8-2) played North Mason on Wednesday after press deadline and will host Kingston at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, looking to solidify its second-place standing in the Olympic League.
North Kitsap 5, Sequim 2
POULSBO — Sequim won a pair of singles matches against North Kitsap, but the Vikings were able to win a couple of tiebreakers in the doubles matches to eke out a 5-2 win over the Wolves.
Lincoln Bear beat Drew Silott 6-4, 6-3, while Josh Loucks beat North Kitsap’s Edmond Sargusan 6-2, 7-5.
The match came down to a couple of tiebreakers. Sebastian Buhron and Zach Post lost their match 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (10-7 tiebreaker), while Tegan Kurtze and Ryan Stites lost 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 (10-5).
Finn Baarten and Nico Musso had a close doubles loss at 6-2, 7-6, while Mason Rapelje and Bjorn Henrickson lost to NK’s No. 1 pair of Grady DeVries and Rocco Targett 6-2, 6-2.
Wyatt Perez also lost a singles match 6-2, 6-1.
