JOYCE — All three eligible North Olympic Peninsula Class 1B volleyball teams clinched berths at the 1B state tournament next weekend in Yakima with wins at the 1B Tri-District Tournament in Joyce on Saturday.
The first to seal a spot was Quilcene, which continued its undefeated season by winning its opening match Saturday morning in a 3-0 sweep over Neah Bay.
The Rangers (18-0 overall), winners of the SeaTac 1B League and ranked No 2 statewide, next played late Saturday against Evergreen Lutheran. If Quilcene won that match, they will have played for the Tri-District championship Saturday night.
The Red Devils earned a state spot later on Saturday with a 3-1 win against Providence Classical Christian.
Clallam Bay also earned a trip to Yakima with a 3-2 win against Christian Faith.
The Bruins faced Mount Vernon Christian in the semifinals late Saturday.
Sequim at districts
TACOMA — The Sequim volleyball team is still alive at the West Central District volleyball tournament and has a clear path to make it to state, though the Wolves will have had to win two matches late Saturday.
The Wolves (13-3, 10-2), beat Clover Park 3-0 in their opening match Friday at districts. They then lost to Fife 3-1 Friday night. Fife is a solid 15-2 team and the No. 2 seed out of the South Puget Sound League.
Sequim played Saturday against Olympic, a No. 4 seed out the Olympic League 2A Division that the Wolves have beaten twice. If the Wolves beat Olympic, then Saturday night, they would possibly face Kingston, a No. 3 seed out of the Olympic League that the Wolves have also beaten twice. In fact, Sequim didn’t lose a single set to either Olympic or Kingston this season.
If the Wolves won both of these matches (results were after press deadline), then they will have qualified for the state 2A tournament.
Forks falls
MONTESANO — The Spartans’ season came to a close with a pair of close losses to Castle Rock and White Salmon at the Class 1A Southwest District Tournament.
Forks fell 25-23, 25-12, 25-21 to Castle Rock and lost 25-23, 25-23, 26-24 to White Salmon.
“Except for the second game against Castle Rock all of our scores were so close,” Spartans coach Patty Brandt said.
“I am so pleased with the dedication and work ethic that this young team has shown all season. They fought to the last point all six games. I am very proud of their efforts and looking forward to our future with this group.”
Junior Bailey Queen totaled 18 kills and seven stuff blocks to lead Forks.
Freshman Rian Peters added six kills and two stuff blocks. Senior Emily Thomas had six kills, while freshman Jayden Olsen added five kills.
Julia Lausche notched 26 assists in the two games.
Forks finished 10-7 on the season after going 0-14 in 2015.
