PREP VOLLEYBALL: Port Angeles fares well in final set vs. Bainbridge

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles was swept by Class 3A Bainbridge in an Olympic League contest Thursday, but the Riders finished the match off in much better form than the team started the evening.

The Roughriders dropped the match 25-16, 25-8, 26-24.

“In the third set we were able to keep the ball up in serve/receive, able to keep the ball in play, able to set it front row or back row to get the ball over,” coach Alyssa Wetzler said. “We had some good solo blocks as well Our hitter coverage was good and we played tight defense.”

Wetzler said Port Angeles was able to execute some offensive sets as well.

“We had a number of perfect passes and were able to run some quick plays to get some points,” Wetzler said.

“Lily Thomas had some great digs, Kenzi Moses got some digs and she had a couple of strong back-row attacks.

Bainbridge has strong serving, intentional serving — they pick a spot and can get the ball there.”

Defensively, Natalie Tenneson came through with some blocks.

Wetzler also had praise for a couple of other players.

“Paige Pangaro she was very consistent and in control of the ball,” Wetzler said. “I don’t think she made any errors, front row and back row on the right side. And Mary Halberg had a couple of great kills that went right between Bainbridge’s blockers, they were beautiful. “

The Riders (2-4, 2-5 play today at the Mark Morris tournament against teams from Anacortes, Heritage and Kalama in pool play.
