PREP VOLLEYBALL: PA spikers sweep Olympic in league tourney opener; Sequim next

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles volleyball team swept Olympic 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-17) in the opening round of the Olympic 2A League tournament.

The victory sets up a second-round tournament match between the Roughriders and the Sequim Wolves at 6:15 p.m. today in Sequim. Port Angeles is a No. 3 seed at 11-4 and Sequim is a No. 2 seed at 11-3. Sequim received a first-round bye for being the No. 2 seed.

Win or lose, both teams are still alive in the tournament and move on to Saturday. They are likely both moving on to the West Central District 2/3 tournament next week.

Port Angeles and Sequim split two matches during the regular season.

In Tuesday’s first-round match, it was the Roughriders’ third straight 3-0 win. Lily Halberg again led the Riders in kills with seven. She also had nine digs.

Setter Josephine Edgington had 16 assists, five aces and seven digs. Libero Cindy Liang had 24 digs and three aces.

Alexis Perry had six kills and three aces. Heidi Leitz had five kills and Jasmine Messinger four kills.

The winner of tonight’s Sequim-Port Angeles match will move on to the Olympic League championship match at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kingston High School, most likely against unbeaten North Kitsap. Thursday’s loser will play for third place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingston, likely against North Mason.
