CHIMACUM — East Jefferson volleyball ended its season with two victories in its final three contests, including a 3-0 win over Jefferson County neighbors Quilcene on Monday, 25-5, 25-18 and 25-5.
The Rivals (3-11, 4-11) also earned a road win against Vashon in a match played at Charles Wright on Saturday.
“They fought very hard during the game and worked together very well,” Rivals coach Emily Zenz said. “It was a great culmination of the teamwork and effort they displayed and the improvement they made working together this season.”
Early in the season, team t-shirts were distributed that emphasized Chimacum and Port Townsend athletes playing alongside each other.
“They said East Jefferson Rivals with ‘Stronger Together’ in the middle,” Zenz said. “There’s no question [combining for athletics] has made us stronger and more competitive.”
Trailing 5-3 in the first game, senior Akira Anderson closed out the game at the service line, scoring an impressive 23 straight points.
“She won the game on her service,” Zenz said. “She had a bunch of aces in there, a few rallies with Sophie Patterson getting a handful of kills.”
Zenz said Alyssa Vandenberg also did well in the middle. “She had impressive blocks all night at middle block and some kills as well,” Zenz said.
The Rivals said goodbye to Anderson, setter Jessica Hawley, Patterson and Hannah Cotterill.
“Akira Anderson, she went out on a great run and will be starting her club volleyball season soon,” Zenz said. “Jessica Hawley was our setter and she helped carry the team for the last four years. Sophie Patterson, our other middle block, worked really hard on getting a lot of good blocks and some awesome kills, and our last senior, Hannah Cotterill, strived to go above and beyond to be the best player she could be.”

FORKS — The Spartans swept the Wildcats 25-21, 25-17 and 25-14 as they prepared for the start of the Class 2B District IV Tournament Saturday.
Kadie Wood led Forks with eight kills and two aces while Kyra Neel added seven kills and an ace.
Kaidence Rigby served for five aces, made four blocks and added a kill for the Spartans (9-2, 9-3), who are second in the Pacific League behind Raymond (10-0, 12-1).
Setter Erika Williams dished out seven assists and earned five service aces for Forks, while Elizabeth Soto totaled five aces and Eladia Hernandez four aces and one kill.
Kyrissa Duncan added six assists, two aces and a kill while Brynn Daniels added an ace.
Forks visits Chief Leschi on Thursday.
