PORT ANGELES — Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt won four individual and relay events, helping to lead the Wolves to a solid second place in a four-way track meet at Port Angeles this weekend.
Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson likewise had a big day, winning two distance events and establishing the top times in the state in both events.
Pyeatt, remarkably a top distance runner in cross country, dominated the sprints at Saturday’s meet, winning the 100 meters in 13.25 seconds, the 200 in 27.76 seconds and the 400 in 58.51 seconds.
The Klahowya girls won the meet with 78 team points, while Sequim was right behind with 73. Port Angeles had 66 and Kingston 42.
For the boys, Klahowya won with 68 points, while Kingston was second with 63.5. The Port Angeles boys came within a whisker of second at 62.5 points, and Sequim finished with 51.
Girls
Larson won the 800 meters in 2:17.90 and the 1,600 in 5:09.04.
How good are Pyeatt and Larson? Pyeatt’s best 100 and 200 times are No. 2 in the state among 2A girls. Her 400 time Saturday is tops in the state among 2A girls. Larson’s 800 and 1,600 times from Saturday are both No. 1 in the state among 2A girls. They don’t get to run in a state track meet this year, but they are showing they are among the best runners at the 2A level.
Sequim’s Jolene Vaara also had a big day, having a hand in three first-place finishes. Vaara won the 100 hurdles in 18.47 seconds and the high jump at 4-10.
The Sequim 4×400 relay team of Taryn Johnson, Vaara, Maci Cogburn and Pyeatt won in 4:18.05. That is the second-fastest 4×400 girls time in the state — the top time is a different Sequim quartet: Johnson, Cogburn, Anastasia Updyke and Rileigh VanDyken.
Johnson also won the 300 hurdles in a time of 52.51.
Port Angeles’ Katelyn Sheldon took first in the shot put with a distance of 24-2½ and her Roughriders teammate Camille Stensgard won the javelin with a throw of 100-8.
Boys
Henry Hughes had a big day for Sequim. He won the 400 meters in 54.19 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 5-2. He was the only Olympic Peninsula boy who won multiple events.
Other area winners include:
3,200 — Jack Gladfelter, Port Angeles, 10:29.25.
110 hurdles — Caleb Flodstrom, PA, 17.20.
300 hurdles — Xander Maestas, PA, 44.56.
Pole vault — Mirek Skov, Sequim, 9-0.
Long jump — Logan Laxson, Sequim, 18-5½.
East Jefferson at Bainbridge

BAINBRIDGE — Thanks to some top finishes in distance and field events, the East Jefferson girls finished second in a four-way track meet, while the boys came within one point of second place.
The girls were a solid second with 48 team points, behind only 3A Bainbridge’s 68. Olympic had 27 and Bremerton 14. For the boys, Bremerton won with 61 points, while Bainbridge had 38 and East Jefferson 37. Olympic finished with 11 points.
East Jefferson didn’t do a lot of damage in the sprints and the middle distances, but won both 3,200-meter races. Sebastian Manza won the boys race with a time of 10:55.20, while Fiona Fraser won the girls race in 13:02.71.
East Jefferson’s Stephanie Sanchez also picked up a first place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.37.
In the field events, East Jefferson dominated, as seven different athletes won events.
For the boys, Anson Jones won the shot put with a distance of 39-2¼, Tusker Behrenfeld won the discus with a throw of 99-1 and Bjorn Danaan-Devas won the javelin with a throw of 153-7.
For the girls, Ava Vaughan-Mifsud won the discus with a throw of 84-8, Ellise Gardner, a freshman, won the javelin with a throw of 79-2½, Aurin Asbell won the long jump with a leap of 15-7, and Lia Poore won the triple jump with a distance of 28-9½.
