PORT ANGELES — The Sequim boys and girls track teams rode their sprinters and middle distance runners to each come in first place at the Port Angeles Invitational this weekend.
The Sequim girls tied with North Kitsap with 121 points each for the top spot, while the Sequim boys scored 122 points, edging North Kitsap by one point.
The Forks girls (59 points) finished fourth, while Crescent (48) came in sixth, Port Angeles (47) seventh, Neah Bay (34) eighth and Clallam Bay (19) ninth.
For the boys, Port Angeles (51) was fifth, Forks (42) sixth, Crescent (28) seventh, Neah Bay (26) eighth and Clallam Bay (11) ninth.
Other teams at the meet were North Kitsap, Coupeville and Olympic.
The Wolves’ Tyler Mooney had a big day, winning the 100-meter dash in an incredibly close race. Mooney finished with a time of 11.49 seconds, beating Logan Slomon of North Kitsap, who finished with a time of 11.50.
Mooney also won the 200 with a time of 23.47 seconds. His teammate Henry Hughes won the 400 in 53.33 and Sequim’s Colby Ellefson won the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:47.76. Ellefson was also second in the 800 (2:16.24).
Sequim’s Adrian Brown won the 110 hurdles (16.56) and both Sequim relay teams won. The 4×100 squad (Zack Gufler, Brown, Hughes, Mooney) took first with a time of 46.34 and the 4×400 (Hughes, Mooney, Brown, Mirek Skov) took first in 3:57.81. In all, Mooney finished first in four events.
Jack Gladfelter of Port Angeles won the 1,500 in a time of 4:22.60.
Other top finishes include a second place by Forks’ Sloan Tumaua in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 3 inches. Titus White of Crescent picked up a second in the javelin with a throw of 112-9 and Skov was second in the pole vault at 9-6. Dominiq Sprague of Crescent was third in the triple jump (34-2).
Girls
For the girls, Riley Pyeatt, a rare specialist in the sprints, middle distances and long distance, started out the season where she left off last year, winning the 100 (13.39) and the 400 (1:01.76).
One of the most impressive performances on the day was by Sequim’s Kaitlyn Bloomenrader. She won the 800-meter run in 2:32.84 by a huge margin of 25 seconds.
Ryana Moss of Neah Bay won the 1,500 (5:48.15), just beating Sequim’s Anastasia Updike (5:52.59). Moss also won the 300 hurdles (55.98).
Sequim’s Eve Mavy won the 3,000 (12:09.03) and her teammate Rileigh VanDyken won the 100 hurdles (20.11) and the pole vault (7-0).
The Sequim 4×400 team of Hi’ilei Robinson, Bloomenrader, Mavy and Pyeatt won in 4:24.79 by a giant margin of 43 seconds. Robinson picked up an individual first in the javelin (64-8).
Both the Sequim 4×100 team (Emma Bergmann, Isabella Copeland, Nicoline Updike, Katie Morris — 56.45) and the 4×200 team (Robinson, Morris, Updike, Pyeatt — 1:55.55) finished second.
Crescent’s Katelyn Dunavent won the discus with a throw of 75-8 and came in second in the shot put with a distance of 24-8.
