ARLINGTON — Port Townsend’s Nathan Cantrell won the 3,200-meter race at the 19-school Lakewood Invitational with a sub-10 minute time that is among the best in the state.
Cantrell went up against runners from eight 3A and 4A schools and six 2A schools and beat them all in Saturday’s meet. He won the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 52.13 seconds. It was not Cantrell’s personal best, but he was only three seconds behind his fastest time and his Saturday run was the fifth-fastest 3,200 1A time in the state so far this spring. Only three runners out of 20 at the Lakewood Invite finished under 10 minutes.
Dylan Tracer also had a good meet for the Redhawks. He finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.56 and was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.77.
The Redhawks’ Seamus Fraser was sixth in the 2K steeplechase with a time of 7:02.59. Chimacum’s best place was by Tanner Carstensen in the triple jump. He finished eighth with a distance of 36 feet, 7½ inches.
For the girls, the Cowboys’ Jada Trafton and Elizabeth Shifflett had the best Jefferson County finishes. Trafton came in fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-9¼, while Shifflett finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.20.
Chimacum’s Grace Crone-Senzloff was sixth in the discus with a throw of 96-5.
Port Townsend’s best finish among the girls was by the Redhawks’ 4×100 relay. Gina Brown, Aurin Asbell, Anika Avelino and Sierra Ruegg finished sixth with a time of 54.28.
Individually, Avelino was eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:39.35.
Port Townsend and Chimacum will next compete in the Olympic League 1A championships Friday at Klahowya.
Forks at BCS Invitational
BELLEVUE — Forks’ Luke Dahlgren had a personal-record in the discus, finishing in second place at the BCS Invitational in Bellevue.
Dahlgren had a throw of 153 feet, 1 inch, beating 59 other competitors from 18 schools. His distance wasn’t good enough to beat everyone, but it was good enough to be the third-best discus throw at the 1A level in the state. He was actually beaten by a 1B thrower from Cedar Park Christian. Finishing third in the discus was Dahlgren’s teammate Skyler Steffan with a distance of 134-3. Steffan also picked up a seventh in the javelin with a distance of 119-9.
Dahlgren also finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 43 feet, 0 inches.
Forks’ Karen Ensastegui-Salazar finished third in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13 minutes, 42.57 seconds. Her teammate Julia Biciunas finished third in the high jump with a height of 4-6, a personal best.
Kesia Rowley also finished fifth in the javelin with a personal-record distance of 88-11.
Wesley Camacho had a good meet for the Spartans. He finished fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:00.67, sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:12.23 and eighth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:49.91.
As a team, the Forks boys were seventh out of 18 teams, while the girls were 13th. The Spartans track team will next compete in a home meet Wednesday against Hoquiam and Tenino.
Baseball
Sequim 10, Kingston 8
SEQUIM — The Wolves baseball team scored nine runs in the first four innings against Kingston and held off a Buccaneers’ rally to win 10-8.
With Friday’s win, Sequim moves into third place, with Port Angeles and North Kitsap battling for first place tonight at Civic Field.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Wolves responded with five runs in the bottom of the first. A two-run double by Hayden Eaton was the big blow, while Silas Thomas and Caleb Pozernick also had RBI singles.
After that rough first inning, pitcher Michael Young settled down with two scoreless innings in the second and third. Sequim added four more runs in the fourth as Thomas had a two-run single and two more runs came in on an error and a groundout.
Kingston rallied for four runs in the fifth, but with the tying run on second base, Eaton, now pitching, got a flyout and a strikeout to end the threat. The Wolves added an insurance run in the sixth without a hit (a hit batsman, two walks and a groundout), while pitchers Brandon Barnett and Joey Oliver slammed the door on the Bucs, allowing no more runs.
Sequim pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Just four out of Kingston’s eight runs were earned.
Thomas ended up 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Eaton finished with a double, a run scored and two RBIs, while Michael Grubb had a hit and three runs scored. Johnnie Young had a hit and two runs scored.
Sequim (6-5, 11-7) plays at Olympic (4-7, 7-11) today.
