PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Sequim boys pick up eight firsts, win Port Angeles meet

PORT ANGELES — The Sequim boys, led by Murray Bingham in the distance events and Darren Salazar in the sprints, won the Port Angeles Invitational, edging out North Kitsap by 10 points.

The Wolves’ boys won a total of eight events, with Salazar winning two sprint events — the 100-meter (11.77 seconds) and 200-meter (23.95) dashes — and Bingham taking first in two distance events — 800 meters (1:59.13) and 1,500 meters (4:26.17). Bingham and Salazar were also a part of the Wolves’ first-place 4×400 relay team (3:46.27) along with Henry Hughes and Theo McMurray.

Sequim had 133 points to North Kitsap’s 123. Ten schools participated in Saturday’s meet at Port Angeles High School, including Olympic Peninsula schools Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks, Clallam Bay, Crescent and Neah Bay.

On the girls’ side, Port Angeles finished a close second to North Kitsap as the Vikings and the Roughriders dominated the meet. North Kitsap had 156 points and Port Angeles 134. No other team had more than 80 points.

The Port Angeles girls won five events, with Millie Long taking first in both hurdle events, the 110 meters (16.32 seconds) and the 300 meters (50.15).

Lauren Larson, fresh off her dominant year in cross country, won the 3,000 meters in 11:01.26, more than 1 minute and 45 seconds better than the second-place time by Karen Ensastegui-Salazar of Forks. Larson also won the 1.5K steeplechase in 5:29.65 by more than a minute over the second-place time.

The Port Angeles boys finished third overall with 90 points. Liam Clark won two events for the Roughriders, the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches) and the long jump (19 feet, 9¼ inches).

The Forks boys finished sixth, Neah Bay seventh, Clallam Bay eighth and Crescent 10th.

On the girls’ side, Sequim finished third, Forks sixth, Clallam Bay seventh, Neah Bay eighth and Crescent 10th.

400 meters — Henry Hughes, Sequim, 55.23.

300-meter hurdles — Fischer Jensen, Sequim, 41.92.

Javelin — Riley Cowan, Sequim, 166-9. Cowan placed fourth at state last year in the javelin. This would have been his third-best throw of the year last season.

Other area girls’ winners include:

400 meters — Riley Pyeatt, Sequim, 1:01.31. Pyeatt, a freshman, ran in her first-ever varsity meet. She is also a distance runner and showing her versatility, she also finished second in the 100 meters and second in the 200 meters.

Javelin — Hannah Olson, Clallam Bay, 85 feet, 9 inches.

High Jump — Abby Schroeder, Sequim, 5-0.

Pole Vault — Mckenzie Musalek, Port Angeles, 8-6.
