POULSBO — Sequim singles tennis player Kendall Hastings made it to the championship match of the Olympic League tournament and finished second, qualifying for districts next week.
The Port Angeles duo of Cindy Liang and Gwyneth Van Blair also will be moving on to the district tennis tournament after finishing fourth in the tournament Monday.
The league tournament continues later this week with more Sequim and Port Angeles players having a chance for district as fifth-place finishers.
Hastings reached the championship match by beating Tulip Carter of Bremerton 6-0, 6-0 and then beating teammate Tiffany Lam 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.
That put Hastings in the semifinal, where she beat Bailey Walton of Olympic 6-1, 6-1.
North Kitsap’s Teegan Devries won the league singles championship, beating Hastings in the finals 6-0, 6-1.
Liang and Van Blair went 3-2 at league. They beat Sydney Thompson-Harris/Kendal Day of Sequim 6-0, 6-2, and Emma Hunt and Ava Oldright of North Mason 6-0, 6-2.
The duo lost to Elley Robinson and Illana Brocket of North Kitsap 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, before bouncing back to beat Sydney Hegtvedt and Dani Herman of Sequim 6-2, 6-2 to qualify for district. They lost their third-fourth place final match 6-0, 6-2 to Olivia Cary and Beckham Ochs of North Kitsap.
Hegtvedt and Herman started off beating Alejandra Mendoza and Ana Nunez of Bremerton 6-0, 6-0, then lost to Tiffany Lee and Julia Beatty of North Kitsap 6-3, 6-2. They responded by coming from behind to beat Kianna Clay and Kyle Sundstrom of Kingston 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. That put them into the match against Liang and Van Blair. They play for fifth place later this week with still a chance for district.
Port Angeles’ Waverly Mead also has a chance to move on to district. She won three singles matches against Carter (6-0, 6-0), Liberty Lauer of Port Angeles (7-6, 6-0) and Emlyn Coulter of Olympic (6-0, 6-0), while losing to Lam (6-1, 6-4) and Walton of Olympic (6-0, 6-0) to qualify for a fifth-sixth place match against Sequim’s No. 2 singles player Calleigh Thompson on Thursday. The winner will move on to districts.
Thompson made it to the fifth-place match by beating Tyra Zetty of North Kitsap 6-1, 6-2, then losing 6-0, 6-0 to Watson. She followed that up in the consolation bracket with wins over Ava Obernberger of North Kitsap (6-4, 6-2) and Lam (6-1, 6-1). She lost to Elaina Soboleski of North Kitsap 4-6, 6-2, 10-1.
The Port Angeles doubles team of Sarah Hancock and Bella Artis beat Thompson-Harris and Day 6-2, 6-2. Lauer defeated Kristina Prescott of Kingston 6-0, 6-3.
