PREP SWIMMING: Port Angeles dives back in during first time trial

PORT ANGELES — Four Port Angeles individuals and six relay teams earned district-qualifying times as the Roughriders girls swim and dive team returned to the recently renovated Shore Aquatic Center on Tuesday evening.

The first time trial of the abbreviated, COVID-19 2021 season doubled as the first swim meet held at the Port Angeles pool since a boys last-chance qualifier in February 2019. Riders boys and girls swimmers trekked to the YMCA of Sequim for meets last school year.

Freshman Harper McGuire was impressive in her debut meet for Port Angeles, earning three district-qualifying times.

“She qualified for districts in every event she swam tonight,” Riders coach Sally Cole said.

McGuire posted a time of 59.92 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, 2:13.84 in the 200 free and 1:11.55 in the backstroke.

Fellow freshman Yau Fu was a two-event qualifier, posting district times in the 200 free (2:22.06) and 100 butterfly (1:15.95).

Senior captain Adriana McClain notched a qualifying time in the 200 free in 2:22.55.

Junior Anne Edwards added a district-worthy time of 28.19 in the 50 free.

Fu, McGuire, McClain and Edwards teamed up to post a district time in the 200 medley relay in 2:07.83 while a second 200 medley relay squad of Sara Wilson, Lydia Wallace, Fern Knobel and Sophia Salas also posted a district time of 2:14.69.

McClain, Fu, McGuire and Wallace swam a district time of 2:01.22 in the 200 free, while Knobel, Rachel Cooper, Emilee Reid and Wilson also qualified for districts with a time of 2:05.

The 400 free teams of McGuire, Fu, McClain and Wallace (4:31.63) and Wilson, Knobel, Reid and Cooper (4:45.46) also earned district marks.

Edwards led the 1-meter dive event with a score of 157.45, while junior Aubrie Scott (136.8) and senior Maizie Tucker (105.6) also competed.

Port Angeles swim and dive will be back for its second time trial at William Shore Pool at 5 p.m. Friday.
