PREP SWIMMING: Area swimmers earn berths at district

KINGSTON — Swimmers from Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend got one last chance to qualify for the West Central District III 2A meet to be held Nov. 8 and 9 at the Olympic League Divisional Meet held late last week.

The divisional swim meet is a chance for swimmers and divers who hadn’t already qualified for districts to have one last chance to move on to postseason.

Qualifying for district with their performances at Kingston High School on Friday was the Port Angeles 200 medley relay team of Leia Kenton, Hannah Sugg, Hana Medgin and Sophia Murray, who won their race with a time of 2 minutes, 23.42 seconds.

The Sequim 200 medley relay team (Riley Hough, Melanie Byrne, Morgan Cariou and Aleah Chen) finished second with a time of 2:25.65, also qualifying for district. This team cut three seconds off its previous best time.

The Riders’ Sage Hunter won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.07, qualifying for district and the Riders 200 freestyle relay team of Hunter, Murray, Ava Murdock and Sugg won its race in a time of 2:03.71, a district-qualifying time.

Kaylee Barlow of Port Townsend qualified for the 1A district meet by winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:11.88.

The Roughriders’ 400 freestyle team of Adrianna McClain, Emilee Reid, Leia Kenton and Hana Medgin won its race with a time of 4:47.52, a district-qualifying time.

Anne Edwards of Port Angeles, with no home diving board this season while the William Shore Pool is rebuilt, qualified for state in the diving with 294.95 points. State required 265 points.

A number of Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Sequim swimmers had already qualified for district during the season at earlier meets as these teams will have big contingents at their postseason meets.

Also winning races, but not with times good enough to qualify for district, includes:

200 freestyle — Magdaline Ferland, Port Townsend, 2:33.99.

100 butterfly — Lauren Sundin, Sequim, 1:17.94.

100 freestyle — Natalie George, Sequim, 1:05.32.

100 breaststroke — Fern Knoble, Port Angeles, 1:24.78,

The WCD III 2A meet will be held at Hazen High School with top finishers moving on to the state meet.
