PREP SPORTS: Weather continues to wreak havoc

PORT ANGELES — Inclement weather eventually wiped out all of Wednesday’s prep and college sports activities for North Olympic Peninsula teams, and more prep events have already been announced for today.

School closures forced postponements of all afterschool activities in the Port Angeles, Crescent, Quillayute Valley, Sequim, Cape Flattery and Quilcene school districts.

Port Townsend schools opened on snow routes but chose to close early when snow and windy conditions moved in Wednesday afternoon — postponing a scheduled wrestling match with Vashon.

Chimacum School District opened as normal but canceled all sports practices when rough weather moved into the area.

The Peninsula College men’s and women’s basketball teams were scheduled to play at Skagit Valley in Mount Vernon, but those games have been postponed.

The Pirate women will visit the Cardinals at 2 p.m. Monday while the Pirate men will play at Skagit Valley at 7 p.m. Feb. 1.

Peninsula athletic director Rick Ross said the split makeup dates were set to accommodate a travel date for Skagit women’s head coach Deb Castle.

Today’s postponements

Port Angeles and Sequim made the decision Wednesday to keep schools closed today — postponing athletic events until safer conditions arrive.

That decision shuttered a Port Angeles/Sequim gymnastics competition at North Kitsap, a Sequim wrestling match with Kingston and North Kitsap and Port Angeles’ home wrestling match with Port Townsend and Bremerton.

A Kingston vs. Port Angeles boys swim meet at the Sequim YMCA also has been postponed.

A Forks wrestling dual with Elma and Montesano originally set for today has been pushed to Tuesday. The Spartans will wrestle the Eagles and Bulldogs at Elma High School starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
