PORT ANGELES — Sequim’s Waverly Shreffler was part of two record-breaking performances at the Port Angeles Invitational.
Shreffler broke a 23-year-old meet record in the 400-meter with a time of 60.40 seconds, surpassing the 60.47 mark set by Port Angeles’ Laura Burkhardt in 1992.
Shreffler also helped set a new meet record 4×400-meter relay along with Mercedes Woods, Gretchen Happe and Heidi Vereide. They ran the relay in 4 minutes, 19.47 seconds, which beat North Kitsap’s 2010 time of 4:21.17 by more than a second.
As a team, the Sequim girls (103 points) finished third at Saturday’s meet behind North Kitsap (136) and Port Angeles (104).
The Sequim boys, meanwhile, placed first with 114.5 points, edging North Kitsap, which had 112.5.
The Wolves were led by the all-around efforts of Alex Barry and Jackson Oliver.
Barry won the javelin with a mark of 168 feet, 4 inches. The senior is coming off a third-place finish at state last year in the event.
He also placed third in the discus and fifth in the 100, and helped Sequim’s 4×100 relay place second, along with Curtis Gorr, Oscar Herrera and Jason Springer.
Oliver won the high jump with a mark of 6-05.50, and placed third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.
Herrera and Joshua Cibene also had first-place finishes at the meet, Herrera in the 110-meter hurdles (15.62) and Cibene in the pole vault (11-06).
Port Angeles’ Sam Burton finished two spots behind Cibene in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet.
Herrera also placed second in the 300 hurdles.
Brendan Despain came in second in the 1,500 meters, while Kane Stoddard was third in the 400.
The 4×400 team of Springer, Stoddard, Despain and Herrera finished third for the Wolves.
The Roughriders came in sixth at the meet, while Port Townsend was eighth, Crescent took 10th, Neah Bay was 11th, Forks was 12th and Clallam Bay was 13th.
Matt Robbins won two events for Port Angeles, the shot put (44-04.75) and the hammer (92-01).
The Riders’ other winner Saturday was Peter Butler, who placed first in the 3-kilometer steeplechase with a time of 10:15.
Paul Van Rossen placed second in the discus and the hammer for Port Angeles.
Hayden Wickham followed Robbins and Van Rossen in the hammer with a third-place showing.
Port Townsend dominated the boys distance runs.
Ryan Clarke won the 1,500 (4:15.03) and the 3,000 (9:22.08), and Brennan LaBrie took first in the 800 (2:04.54).
Martin Waldrip had Crescent’s best finish, a third-place showing in the steeplechase. He also took fifth in the 3,000 and seventh in the 1,500.
Jordan Scott tied for third in the 300 hurdles for the Loggers.
Cameron Buzzell placed fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200 to lead Neah Bay.
Austin Pegram’s fourth-place finish in the 400 was Forks’ top showing.
Clallam Bay was led by Sam Signor’s sixth-place finish in the 300 hurdles.
Kingston’s Garret Rouser broke a 35-year-old meet record in the boys 300 hurdle with a time of 39.98 seconds.
The previous record of 41.1 seconds by Chris Cooke of Port Angeles had stood since 1980.
Port Angeles girls take second
Freshman distance runner Gracie Long won both individual events she competed in for Port Angeles, the 1,500 (5:14.81) and the 2-kilometer steeplecase (7:37.21).
She was the Riders’ only champion, but the Port Angeles girls racked up a number of top-three showings, including four by senior Zoe Owens.
Owens was second in the javelin, triple jump and long jump, and third in the pole vault.
Elyse Lovgren placed second in the 100, and Annika Pederson did likewise in the 3,000.
Jennifer Danielson took second in the hammer, followed by Devin Edwards in third.
Cami Raber placed third in the shot put. She also placed fourth in the discus.
Port Angeles’ 4×100 relay team of Madison St. George, Raber, Gretchen Sotebeer and Lainnie Lyamba came in third.
Along with her records in the 400 and 4×400, Shreffler also came in second in the 200 and fifth in the 100 for Sequim.
The Wolves’ other two winners were Gretchen Happe in the 800 with a time of 2:36.80, and Heidi Vereide with a 15-09.75 in the long jump.
Vereide also placed third in the triple jump.
Other top-three showings for the Wolves were Mattie Clark, second in the 100 hurdles; Emily van Dyken, second in the pole vault; Molley Early, third in the 300 hurdles; and the 4×100 relay of Woods, Anna White, Early and Telicia Busby, which placed second.
The Clallam Bay girls finished ninth as a team, Crescent was 10th, Forks was 11th, Port Townsend took 12th and Neah Bay came in 13th.
Molly McCoy had Clallam Bay’s top finish, tying for third in the high jump with a 4-08. She also was fifth in the long jump.
Jennica Maynes added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump for the Bruins, and Atokena Abe took fifth in the 200.
Ryan Lester was third in the 100 hurdles to lead Crescent. She also took fourth in the 200 and sixth in the long jump.
Ashara Dodson placed fourth in the javelin for the Loggers.
For Forks, Kari Larson had three third-place showings: the 800, the 1,500 and the steeplechase.
Port Townsend’s Sira Wines won the javelin with a throw of 83 feet.
Freshman Ally Bradley also had a top-five finish for the Redhawks, taking fifth in the 3,000.
Vonte Aquirre was part of a pair of eighth-place finishes for Neah Bay: the triple jump and the 4×200 relay with Cheyanna Svec, Charlotte Shaw and Kayla Winck.

Class 2B 81, Class 1B 64
SEATTLE — Neah Bay’s Faye Chartraw and Kaela Tyler and their Class 1B teammates fell short at the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-State game at King’s High School.
Chatraw scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds in the game, while Tyler finished with six points and four boards in Saturday’s game.
