SEQUIM — Sequim pitcher Makayla Bentz was named Olympic League Most Valuable Player in voting by the league’s softball coaches.
Bentz handled the majority of pitching duties for the co-league champion Wolves, who advanced to the Class 2A state tournament and placed second at the West Central District tournament.
Bentz, a senior, tossed a five-inning perfect game against North Kitsap in March, striking out 13 of the 15 batters she faced, and threw one-hit shutouts against Bremerton and North Mason.
Sequim teammates Alexas Besand and Olivia Kirsch joined Bentz on the Olympic League First Team.
Besand, a senior who will play softball and basketball at Skagit Valley College next season, was chosen as the top first baseman in the league.
Kirsch, a junior who plays third base, was selected as a utility player.
Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman was selected as Coach of the Year and the Roughriders and North Mason shared the Sportsmanship Award.
Port Angeles, which shared the league title with Sequim, had four players land on the first team: pitcher Sarah Steinman, catcher Tori Kuch, outfielder Carly Gouge and third baseman Ashlee Reid.
Kuch will play softball at Olympic College next year.
Four Wolves made the second team, led by sophomore catcher McKenzie Bentz, outfielders Shelby Lott and Melissa Lewis and shortstop Mary Lu Clift.
Roughriders second baseman Haley Gray made the second team along with Port Townsend’s Gen Polizzi, a utility selection.
Randy Steinman told the Peninsula Daily News that Port Angeles players Ashlee Reid, Sarah Steinman, Haley Gray and Tori Kuch have been selected to play in the All-Star feeder game at Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton on Monday, June 9.
Earning Olympic League honorable mention honors were Halie Wilson and Tia Bourm of Sequim, Alicia Howell and Nizhoni Wheeler of Port Angeles and Baili Shaw and Malia Henderson of Port Townsend.
Boys Soccer
All-Olympic League
Sequim and Port Angeles each landed two players and Port Townsend had one named to the Olympic League First Team voted on by league coaches.
Senior defenders Hector Baylon and Bailey Collins of Sequim were selected for first-team honors.
Jackson May, a freshman forward for the Roughriders and teammate Wei-Yan Fu, a sophomore midfielder, also made the first team.
The Redskins were represented on the first team by Max Meier.
Second-team All-Olympic League honors were given to Sequim senior defender Lijah Sanford and senior midfielder Nicholas Baird, Port Angeles junior midfielders Tim Schneider and Agustin Muller, a Chilean exchange student, and Port Townsend senior midfielder Daniel Charlton.
Honorable mention accolades were given to Sequim sophomore forwards Cameron Chase and Thomas Winfield and junior midfielder Eli Berg.
Senior defenders Tristan Isett and Hayden Kays-Erdmann, along with junior defender Vincent Ioffrida, were honorable mention selections for the Riders.
Port Townsend goalkeeper Forrest Piatt and teammates Patrick Charlton and Shiloh Lamphear-Ramirez also earned honorable mention.
Kingston’s Tommy Nitchman was voted Olympic League MVP.
Klahowya coach Jeff Quinn earned Coach of the Year honors and Klahowya and Bremerton shared the league’s Sportsmanship Award.
Golf
McMenamin, Fox share girls MVP
Sequim freshman Alex McMenamin and Port Angeles senior Dana Fox were named the Olympic League co-MVPs recently after voting by the league’s girls golf coaches.
The pair went back and forth all season for the Olympic League’s scoring average lead, with McMenamin ending up edging Fox by just four-tenths of a stroke, 41 to 41.4, per nine holes.
McMenamin finished third at the Class 2A state tournament and Fox was sixth.
Sequim’s Brianna Kettel was named to the All-Olympic League girls first team.
Klahowya’s Aaron Holiday was named the boys MVP.
He edged out Port Angeles’ Alex Atwell for the scoring average title by just three-tenths of a stroke, 38.2 to 38.5, per nine holes.
Atwell was named to the first team along with Sequim sophomore Jack Shea, who ended with a 39.9 average for nine holes.
Baseball
Shepherd honored as pitcher
Port Angeles pitcher Jordan Shepherd was selected by league coaches to the Olympic League Second Team.
Shepherd originally was listed as receiving second-team honors as a designated hitter and honorable mention as a pitcher before the list was updated.
Shepherd a senior left-hander, has signed a letter of intent to place baseball and Olympic College in Bremerton.
