SEQUIM — Port Angeles’ Cale Wentz and Sequim’s Adrian Aragon produced some of the best competitive golf scores in recent years on the North Olympic Peninsula, with the junior golfers shooting nine-hole rounds of 4-under-par 32 on the front nine at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course on Thursday.
The two teams played the front nine as a par 36. Normally, Cedars is a 37/35 par-72 layout.
“We had a great day at Cedars. These gents have been working, and it’s beginning to show for each of them. Cale and Adrian have a nice little dual going on, and that is fun to watch,” Roughriders boys coach Bob Anderson said. “Best weather all season as well, to boot.”
The two match medalists were joined by a top 10 that included four other Port Angeles linksters firing rounds in the 30s and four players in the low 40s.
Wolves coach Greg Glasser also was enthused about the performances he witnessed.
“Very impressive match,” Glasser said. “Port Angeles had one of the lowest four-player total in years. Adrian and Cale had another great head-to-head battle.”
Port Angeles beat out Sequim 143-169 for the match victory.
Roughriders sophomore Sky Gelder recorded an even-par 36, edging out junior teammate Max Gagnon (37) for third place. Sophomore Kolby Charles posted a 38 to account for the Port Angeles team score. Senior Tate Alton added a 39, and freshman Noah Myers shot 41 for the stacked Riders squad.
Sequim junior Cody Dunscomb added a 43 for eighth place, while Joey Kang carded a 45 and Florentio Martinez turned in a 49.
The Riders visit Bainbridge at Wing Point on Tuesday.
Sequim plays North Mason at Lakeland Village on Tuesday.
Girls Golf Port Angeles 193, Sequim 200
SEQUIM — Mia Neff went low to earn match medalist honors as the Riders edged the Wolves in a close nine-hole match at The Cedars at Dungeness.
“Mia Neff shot her best-ever round of 43,” coach Mike DuPuis said.
Malena Marquez had a 48. Autumn Wilson-Rowland shot 50 and Claire Osterberg a 52. Brenna Furnice had a 59 and Mya Callis a 69.
Sequim was led by Kendra Dotson’s 47. Sara German had a 49, Ramiey Brewer shot 51, Chloe Tweeter had a 53, as did Ella Hood, and Kaiya Robinson shot 60.
Port Angeles visits fellow undefeated Bainbridge at Wing Point on Tuesday.
Sequim heads to North Mason on Tuesday.
Softball Port Angeles 15, Sequim 4
SEQUIM — A six-run fourth inning by the Roughriders broke open a close game between the two rivals Thursday in Sequim.
The big inning was highlighted by RBI doubles by Lynzee Reid and Kennedy Rognlien along with an RBI single by Mikkiah Stevens. It was Rognlien’s second RBI double of the contest.
Sequim held a 4-2 lead after two innings, scoring on RBI singles by Hannah Giddings, Kiley Winter and Ava Lahmeyer in the Wolves’ first turn at bat, while Mia Kirner added an RBI double in the second inning.
Reid earned the win in the circle in relief, tossing two innings and giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
Port Angeles’ No. 1 pitcher Heidi Leitz closed out the game by striking out the side.
The Riders (4-0, 7-1-1) host Bremerton on Monday.
Sequim (0-3, 1-5) hosts North Kitsap.
