CHIMACUM — Sequim girls tennis remained unbeaten on the Olympic League season with a 7-0 sweep of East Jefferson on Wednesday.
The Wolves won each match in straight sets.
Kalli Wiker claimed the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 against Maddie Hess while Olivia Preston dispatched Juniper Cervenka 6-1, 6-3 in their No. 2 singles contest.
Allie Gale added a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Myka Briggs in the No. 3 singles match.
In No. 1 doubles action, the sister tandem of McKenna and Kendall Hastings teamed to beat Sophia Arnovitz and Tiffany Bell 6-0, 6-1.
Melissa Porter and Amanda Weller captured the No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-0 over Olivia Mattern and Katie Clark.
Sydney Sandstrom and Malory Morey knocked off Sophie Frank and Lily Morrison 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles and the No. 4 pairing of Lindsay Swanson and Jordan Hegtvedt beat Awstyn Sukert and Savannah Galloway 6-1, 6-2.
Port Angeles 7, Klahowya 0
SILVERDALE — The Riders swept the Eagles in a road match highlighted by No. 1 singles player Liberty Lauer coming back from a 1-set deficit, and No. 4 doubles team of Millie Long and Holly Jones finishing their match out with a win.
Lauer dropped the first set to Aleah Catt 3-6 but rallied for a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Emma Olsen (6-1, 6-1) and Ellie Getchell (6-1, 6-4) each picked up straight-set wins in Port Angeles’ other singles matches.
Long and Jones shook off a tiebreaker loss to edge Klahowya’s Lana Parco and Natalie Millet 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.
The No. 1 doubles duo of Hannah Reetz and Shannon Callahan won 6-3, 6-2 while No. 2 Reagan Critchfield and Eden Critchfield also won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Kinnley Brady and Hannah Basden teamed for a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 3 doubles match.
Track and Field
East Jefferson wins
PORT ANGELES — East Jefferson picked up a pair of close wins in both the boys and girls portions of a four-team track meet at Port Angeles High School on Wednesday.
Led by wins in the long-distance runs and the throwing events, the East Jefferson boys totaled 81 points to edge Port Angeles (76), Olympic (56) and Sequim (47).
Max Allworth-Miles was a double-event winner for East Jefferson, claiming the 800-meter race in 2 minutes, 9.92 seconds and the 1,600 in 4:45.58, a little under two seconds ahead of Port Angeles’ Naaman McGuffey who set a personal-best time of 4:47.39.
Sebastian Manza also won the 3,200 (11:08.12) for East Jefferson.
East Jefferson’s Anson Jones won the shot put with a personal-best distance of 39-feet,7.5 inches, while teammate Gage Berry had a personal-record throw of 97-02 to claim the discus.
Bjorn Danaan-Devas won the javelin with a throw of 145-08 for East Jefferson, besting teammate Tusker Behrenfeld who set personal records in that event, as well as the discus.
Port Angeles’ Jack Gladfelter set a new best, clearing 8-feet to tie with teammate Zach Pullara in the pole vault, and Xander Maestas set a personal record with a time of 44.96 in the 300 hurdles.
Logan Laxson won the 200 (23.86) and set a personal-record mark of 20 feet to win the long jump for Sequim. Henry Hughes also was a double-event winner for the Wolves, setting personal records of 5-06 in the high jump and 53.98 in the 400.
In the girls contest, Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt ran to three victories, but the Wolves were edged 73-71 by East Jefferson with Port Angeles third with 59 points and Olympic last with 48.
East Jefferson’s Aliyah Yearian (2:53.53) edged fellow freshman teammate Ava Shiflett (2:53.55) in a near-photo finish in the 800. Shiflett went on to win the long jump (13-04.25). East Jefferson junior Lia Poore also set a new best mark of 29-03.75 to win the triple jump.
Pyeatt claimed the 100 (13.0) and 200 sprints (26.49) and set a new record in the 1,600 in 5:18.77 to pace the Wolves.
Jolene Vaara was a two-event winner for Sequim, taking the high jump (5-0) and 100 hurdles (17.63).
Port Angeles senior Lauren Larson was a two-event winner to lead the Riders, claiming the 400 in 1:02.96 and the 3,200 in 11:29.44. Camille Stensgard also won the javelin with a throw of 98-04.
Boys Golf
Sequim 174, North Kitsap 216
PORT LUDLOW — The Wolves put together a solid performance in a sunny match on the par-36 front nine at Port Ludlow Golf Club.
Ben Sweet and Dominic Riccobene tied for match medalist honors for Sequim with rounds of 2-over-par 38, with Sweet sinking three birdies and Riccobene posting two.
“Ben Sweet had an amazing recovery shot from the bank of a pond on hole No. 6, having to remove his shoe and sock to hit it,” coach Sean O’Mera said. “Dominic Riccobene had an absolutely unreal up-and-down for birdie on hole No. 8, hitting a delicate chip shot perfectly down a slope to a tucked pin.”
Garret Hoesel added a 45 and Pryce Glasser a 53 for the Wolves.
“I am proud of the guys,” O’Mera said. “We still have not had a match yet where we have fired on all cylinders, but it is coming soon.”
