FORKS — Sequim girls wrestling placed second at the Forks Lady Invite with three finalists and one champion.
Forks placed fourth with two champions and three finalists, while Port Townsend’s Charity Jesionowski placed second to help the Redhawks earn ninth at Saturday’s meet.
Sedro-Woolley won the invite with 120 points.
“We [had] only 73 girls, but there was some very good competition in several of the weights,” Forks wrestling coach Bob Wheeler said.
“There were three state finalists, including one two-time state champion, and there were eight state placers in the brackets.
“Sequim had a great showing. Sedro-Woolley is a wrestling power for both boys and girls, and Sequim was a close second.”
The Wolves finished with 107.5 points and had eight placers, led by sophomore Alma Mendoza’s championship win in the 125-pound weight class.
Mendoza defeated Puyallup sophomore Brooklyn Bartelson 7-5 in the final.
Senior Kaylee Ditlefsen added a second-place showing in the 140-pound class.
Andrea Kienholtz also was a finalist for Sequim, falling to Brooke Peterson of Forks in the 155 bracket.
Other placers for Sequim were 110-pounder Sophia Cornell, who took third; Kiara Pierson, third at 115 pounds; Jillian Blouin, third at 120; Savannah Fowler, fourth at 140; and Brittany Jensen, fourth at 145.
Peterson, who placed fifth at the Class 1A state championships last year, pinned Kienholtz in 3 minutes, 6 seconds in the 155-pound final.
Tristen Williams claimed the 110-pound title for Forks with a pin of Sedro-Woolley’s Teracita Shanes in 4:58.
Kim Barragan advanced to the 115-pound final for the Spartans and Mariana Gomez finished third at 105 pounds.
Port Townsend had three of four wrestlers place at the meet.
“I am super proud of all four of our female wrestlers,” Redhawks coach Steve Grimm said.
“They are tough girls determined to make state this year. This was their first all-girls tournament and they rose to the challenge and they brought home medals.”
Jesionowski’s 130-pound final was against two-time state champion Jordyn Bartelson of Puyallup, who won the title by pin in 1:46.
Hanna Welch took third in the 140-pound bracket and Chloe Rogers was third at 145 pounds.
Freshman Ally Bradley did not place, but went 1-2 on the day.

OCEAN SHORES — The Spartans played the host Hyaks close for three of four quarters on the second day of the Holiday with the Hyaks tournament.
In the second quarter, though, North Beach outscored Forks 21-10 to build a cushion that the Spartans were never able to make uncomfortable.
“The second quarter was obviously the difference,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said after Saturday’s game.
“We played a lot better than we played [Friday].”
The Spartans were routed by Taholah in their opening game of the tournament, 87-47.
Colton Raben led Forks with 23 points Saturday, while sophomore Parker Browning had 14 points after putting up 17 in Friday’s game.
“Parker definitely had a nice little tournament,” Gooding said. “He’s turning into a better basketball player.”
After being smacked from the start against Taholah, Forks played the Hyaks fairly even in the opening quarter of Saturday’s contest.
But then Gabe Hernandez led North Beach to a big second quarter, scoring 10 of his 20 points in the period.
The Spartans (0-4, 1-7) will have a week of practice before resuming Evergreen League play with a home tilt against Eatonville (2-3, 3-4) this Friday.
“I’m glad we played better than yesterday,” Gooding said.
“Our offense got back in rhythm. Hopefully when we get back to league play we can get back to what we do on offense.”
