CHIMACUM — Port Townsend played Sequim to a 4-4 tie in a boys soccer match that concluded with an offensive flurry.
Five of the eight goals were scored in the final 10 minutes of Tuesday’s match at H.J. Carroll Park.
“A barn-burner,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said. “It was crazy.
“It’s like both teams both forgot how to play defense. Everything that was touched was turning to magic.”
Connor Chisick scored two goals for the Redhawks, and Liam Harris and Kyle Harrison each had two for the Wolves.
Port Townsend’s Beshir Little opened the scoring with the only goal of the first half.
Sequim evened the score in the 55th minute on Harris’ first goal, which was assisted by Eli Berg.
Will Bittner set up Harrison for his first goal in the 62nd minute to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
Then the offenses went nuts.
Chisick’s first goal tied the match at 2-2 at the 71st minute. Two minutes later, Chisick gave the Redhawks a 3-2 lead with a goal off a long free kick.
In the 77th minute, Patrick McCrorie’s long throw-in set up Harris’ second score that tied game at 3-3.
Port Townsend retook the lead with a goal by Payton Manning in the 78th minute.
But Sequim salvaged the tie when Harris sent a free kick in and Harrison kicked it into the goal in the final minute.
Because this was a nonleague match, it ended in a tie rather than proceeding to extra time.
The tie is the second the Wolves have been credited with against the Olympic League’s 1A Division this season. They also played Klahowya to a 0-0 tie in a shortened match last month.
Overall, Brasher was please with his team, which was without starters Thomas Winfield and Adrian Espinoza.
“We played pretty well,” he said.
“Port Townsend was playing really aggressive and tackling very hard, and we kind of kept our composure.”
Sequim (2-2, 3-3-2) hosts Bremerton (2-3, 2-6) today.
The Redhawks (1-5-2) are off until next Thursday when they open Olympic League 1A play against Klahowya (5-1-2) at H.J. Carroll Park.
Sequim won Tuesday’s JV game 8-2.
Kingston 5, Port Angeles 1
KINGSTON — The Roughriders sputtered in their return to action after a 12-day layoff against the Olympic League 2A-leading Buccaneers.
Port Angeles got off to a quick start and had the ball in the Kingston end of the field for the majority of the first five minutes, but the Buccaneers scored on their first counterattack chance early in the fifth minute.
The Riders held their own until halftime, creating several chances to score, but were unable to capitalize.
The Buccaneers opened the game up with four goals in the second half against Port Angeles’ freshman goalkeeper Keenan Leslie.
“Kingston’s overall passing game, soccer sense and individual skills outmatched [us] on the night,” Riders coach Chris Saari said following Tuesday’s game.
“The Buccaneers really moved the ball well and played a complete game, backed up by a very solid senior goaltender [Alex Worland].”
Port Angeles avoided the shutout when Miki Andrus followed a long-range shot by Ben Schneider for a goal.
Along with Andrus on offense, Saari lauded the play of Vincent Ioffrida on defense and Schneider in transition.
The Riders (3-2, 6-2) return to Kitsap Country today when they face Klahowya (5-1-2).
Softball
Port Angeles 15, North Kitsap 0
PORT ANGELES — The undefeated Roughriders came out strong after 12 days in between games due to spring break, run-ruling the Vikings in five innings at Dry Creek Elementary.
“We got great pitching, hitting and only committed one error on defense,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said after Tuesday’s win.
Nizhoni Wheeler and Hunter-Anne Coburn combined to hold North Kitsap to two hits. Wheeler struck out four in two innings and Coburn fanned two in three innings.
At the plate for the Riders, Carly Gouge was 4 for 4 with a stolen base, three runs and an RBI.
Alicia Howell went 3 for 4, driving in two runs and scoring two more, while Emily Johnson had two hits and two runs, Alyssa Wetzler drove in two runs and Coburn had a double.
Port Angeles (2-0, 6-0) next plays at Olympic (2-1, 4-2) today.
