PREP SPORTS: Schneider’s hat trick lifts Port Angeles boys soccer to victory; other area prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Tim Schneider’s three second-half goals held up as Port Angeles defeated Olympic 3-2 in a wild Olympic League boys soccer match.

“Olympic battled [us] for 80 minutes and nearly made a three-goal comeback to tie the game late,” Roughriders coach Chris Saari said.

[We] were able to hold them off and earn three key league points in the hard-fought, end-to-end match.”

Saari said Port Angeles had scoring opportunities in the first half of Thursday’s match but failed to capitalize as the teams headed to halftime tied at 0-0.

Schneider put the Riders ahead in the 48th minute.

“Schneider dribbled into the Trojans’ penalty box and made room for a left-footed shot that slipped by the keeper,” Saari said.

A few minutes later, Angel Rivero was fouled in the box and Schneider’s penalty kick attempt was saved by the Olympic goalkeeper.

Schneider rebounded to convert on penalty kicks after Miki Andrus and Rivero were fouled in the box in the 58th and 63rd minutes, respectively.

Olympic rallied in the 65th minute on a free kick from Nicholas Decker that was headed into the far corner by Makaleb McInnis.

The Trojans pushed late and Decker scored the team’s second goal in the 74th minute, but Olympic couldn’t find the equalizer.

Saari praised Schneider’s play on offense, Vincent Ioffrida on defense and Rivero in transition.

Port Angeles (3-1, 6-1) visits league-leading Kingston (3-0, 5-1) on Tuesday, April 14.

BELFAIR — The Roughriders were just trying to get an insurance run with a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh.

“We were up 4-0 and they chipped at it with runs in the fourth and fifth innings,” Port Angeles coach Vic Reykdal said of Thursday’s game.

“In the seventh, the leadoff guy, Ricky Crawford, singled and stole second.

“We bunted him over to third, and we were trying to squeeze him [home] but they botched the play. Ricky scored and Curran Bradley was safe on first.”

The Riders then managed singles from five of the next six batters.

“The kids just went on a tear, banged out a bunch of hits and it was over,” Reykdal said.

Travis Paynter scattered five hits and three walks while allowing two runs in his five innings pitched to pick up the win for Port Angeles.

Jace Bohman was 3 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs for the Riders, and Eathen Boyer was 4 for 4 with two RBIs.

Port Angeles (2-0, 3-2) hosts rival Sequim (1-1, 4-2) on Monday at 4 p.m. at Civic Field.

PORT ANGELES — Three Port Angeles and Crescent athletes set North Olympic Peninsula-best season marks at the Retro Track and Field Meet at Port Angeles High School.

Roughriders freshman Gracie Long ran the area’s fastest 800-meter time (2:32.41) in just her first time running the event this season.

Long also tops the Peninsula in the 1,600 and the 3,200 this season.

Port Angeles senior Cami Raber broke her own area-best in the discus with a throw of 102 feet, 4 inches, surpassing the 100-foot mark for the first time in her career.

Crescent freshman Paul Frantz moved atop the Peninsula rankings in the 400 with a time of 53.83 seconds at Thursday’s meet.

At the meet, the athletes wore the oldest uniforms the coaches could find, hence the name Retro Track and Field Meet.

Zoe Owens, Elyse Lovgren and Raber were three-time winners for the Port Angeles girls.

Owens took first in the high jump (4-05), triple jump (31-07) and javelin (79-07). She also placed second to Lovgren in the long jump.

Lovgren won the long jump (14-07.5), the 100-meter (13.27 seconds) and tied for first with Owens in the high jump.

Along with the discus, Raber won the shot put with a 29-03 and helped the Riders win the 4×200 relay along with Madison St. George and Ciara Gentry.

St. George also won the 400 with a time of 1:10.39.

Maddie Dougherty won the 1,600 (13:16.46) and the pole vault (6-0).

Ryan Lester was the Crescent girls’ lone winner, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.51 seconds. She also placed second in the triple jump (30-01).

The Crescent boys had a pair of double winners: Frantz and Martin Waldrip.

Along with the 400, Frantz placed first in the 100 with a time of 12.34 seconds.

Waldrip won the 3,200 (11:09.37) and the triple jump (35-11.25).

Alek Long was the Riders’ only multiple winner. He won the 200 (26.41 seconds) and the 1,600 (5:19.87).
