PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Sequim wrestlers win dual meet

SEQUIM — The Sequim wrestling team had a dominant evening, taking down both Port Townsend and Bremerton in a pair of Olympic League duals Wednesday night.

The Wolves (4-4 overall) topped Port townsend 56-18 and beat Bremerton 51-24.

Royhon Augustine took the 103-pound weight class for Sequim with a 15-5 decision against Bremerton while Derek Fruin won the 135 with a 16-0 decision.

Cody Field had the pin at 145 and Lopaka Yasumura claimed the 160-pound division.

The Knights gave up five forfeits in the match allowing Sequim to take advantage.

Austin Middleton claimed a 14-8 decision at 130 against the Redskins, while Fruin won his second match of the night at 135 with a pin.

Winston Babb got the pin at 140, as did Cody Field at 145, Chris Falkey at 189, Emilio Perete at 215 and Jacob Cooper at 285.

The Wolves next prepare for postseason action Feb. 4-5 in Port Angeles.

FORKS 51, HOQUIAM 21

FORKS — The Spartans overpowered the Grizzlies on Wednesday to end the regular season on a good note at 3-3.

“It has been a work in progress,” Forks coach Bob Wheeler said. “But the progress is really good.”

Leandro Ordonez won the 112-pound weight class on a 15-7 decision, Cutter Grahn won at 119 on a pin in one minute, 49 seconds and Sebastian Barragan won at 125 by forfeit.

Tyler Cortani kept things short, winning at 130 with a pin in 56 seconds while Nick Atkins took the 145 class on a pin in 3:22.

Wilson Luna won at 171 on a pin (4:24), while Joel Ward easily took 189 with a 56-second pin.

The Spartans begin the postseason this weekend at Elma starting on Friday at 5 p.m. and continuing Saturday at 11 a.m.

PORT ANGELES 57, NORTH KITSAP 18

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (5-2, 9-2) only lost four matches in their Olympic League dual against the Vikings on Bud Dire Memorial Alumni Night.

North Kitsap gave up four forfeits to Port Angeles allowing them to extend its lead.

Tyler Philp took the win by a 9-3 decision in the 130-pound weight class, while Andrew Symonds got the pin in 1:03 at 140.

Kody Steele won at 145 by pin (1:57), Trevor Lee got the pin at 160 (0:49), as did Brian Cristion at 171 (0:49).

At 189, Nathan Cristion won by pin in 1:52.

The Riders host Olympic today for Senior Night in their last dual of the season starting at 6 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

CRESCENT 48, PORT ANGELES C 37

JOYCE — The Loggers trailed 18-16 at halftime but were able to pull ahead to take the lead and the victory against the Roughriders on Wednesday night.

“The boys played really well,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said. “And I’m real proud of them.”

Joel Williams was the game’s leading scorer, dropping in 29 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to get the double-double for Crescent.

The Loggers will next travel to Neah Bay on Friday, with game time starting at 8 p.m.

NEAH BAY — The Bruins were no match for the Red Devils Wednesday night as Neah Bay jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in North Olympic League play.

Cherish Moss scored 13 points for the Red Devils as the game’s leading scorer.

Neah Bay (4-0 in league, 15-0 overall) will next host Crescent on Friday starting at 6:30 p.m.

JOYCE — The Loggers (0-4, 3-12) dominated the boards against the Roughriders on Wednesday night and played aggressive defense as well.

“Our team is really coming along,” Crescent coach Nate Mandeville said. “We caused a lot of turnovers and steals.”

Sara Moore scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Loggers as the game’s leading scorer while Tori McGowan had seven points and 10 rebounds.

Moore, McGowan and Kelsi Ritchie combined for 28 rebounds, while Taya Williams and Kelly Bellford combined for 15 steals against the Riders.

The Loggers will next travel to Neah Bay on Friday with the game starting at 6:30 p.m.
