PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Sequim shades Bremerton on Velarde’s walk-off single

SEQUIM — Gavin Velarde’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh gave Sequim a 3-2 win in a back-and-forth Olympic League 2A Division baseball game.

The Knights opened the scoring in Wednesday’s game on a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt to second and a single in the top of the first inning.

Bremerton held the lead until the bottom of the fifth when Gavin Velarde brought home a run on a sacrifice fly.

In their next at-bats, the Knights regained the lead on a double and an error as the ball was throw past third base on an attempted steal.

Sequim rallied in their last plate appearances in the bottom of the seventh.

Ian Miller led off with a walk and advanced to second on an infield hit by Silas Thomas. With one out, both runners stole bases to advance up the basepaths.

Velarde then scored both with an RBI single to win the game.

Sequim (3-3, 6-4) steps out of league play to visit Coupeville on Monday.

Softball Chimacum 15, Coupeville 4, 6 innings

COUPEVILLE — The Cowboys utilized the stolen base to near perfection according to coach Jim Eldridge, and ran over the Wolves in an important Olympic League 1A Division duel.

Chimacum (3-0, 4-1) gave Coupeville (2-1, 7-1) its first loss of the season and now hold sole control of first place.

“Their catcher was a little weak, she didn’t have the arm [strength], and we stole about 12 bases in the game,” Eldridge said of Wednesday’s game. “We put the game in motion.”

“We started off pretty good, got three runs in the first. The girls hit the ball well and we played solid defense.

“And Holly Snider pitched a solid game. She threw strikes and if we play good defense and hit the ball we will be in every game.”

Snider struck out two in her six innings pitched.

Mechelle Nisbet led the Chimacum hitters with a 4 for 4 performance at the plate, including four RBIs. Shanya Nisbet doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs, Grace Yaley went 3 for 3 with a walk and three RBIs.

“Grace had some clutch hits,” Eldridge said pointing to a bases-loaded shot that drove in two runs.

Bradyn Nelson also had two hits and three RBIs for the Cowboys.

Chimacum visits the Port Angeles JV on Monday.

Sequim 13, Bremerton 4

BREMERTON — The Wolves trailed 4-3 in the fifth inning before Isabelle Dennis led off with a triple to open up a nine-run rally to push Sequim to the win.

Dennis had two hits, and Adrienne Haggerty also had two hits, including a triple.

Jordan Bentz and Shelby Wells also doubled for the Wolves.

Pitcher Shelby Jones gave up only five hits to earn the win for Sequim and Dennis closed out the game in relief.

The Wolves (3-2, 4-5) visit North Mason on Wednesday.

Quilcene 21, Pope John Paul 0

OLYMPIA — Bailey Kieffer pitched her first no hitter as the Rangers blanked the Eagles 21-0. Kieffer struck out 11, and allowed only two baserunners — one via walk and one on an error.

Quilcene hitters included Abby Weller who went 2 for 3, Erin Macedo who was 2 for 3 with a triple and 3 RBI.

Gina Brown added a two-run single, Alexis Gray went 1-2 with a couple of RBI, and Kieffer helped her cause with a base hit and 3 RBIs.

The Rangers (3-0, 5-0) took advantage of 22 walks and one hit batter.

Girls Golf Sequim wins 3-team match

SEQUIM — Alex McMenamin and Sarah Shea carded low rounds for the Wolves in a win over North Kitsap and Port Angeles.

Sequim totaled 178 strokes, the Roughriders 223 and the Vikings had a total of 224.

“Alex was the medalist with a awesome score of 4-under-par 32,” Wolves coach Gary Kettel said. “Sarah had a very nice round of 40.”

Maddie Withrow carded a 51 and Samantha Smith posted a 55 for Sequim.

Hailey Goudy led Port Angeles with a round of 51, while Tana Hiigel shot a 56, Olivia Due a 57 and Aeverie Politika a 59.

Sequim (4-1) hosts Chimacum on Tuesday.

Port Angeles (2-4) hosts 3A Central Kitsap today.

Boys Golf Sequim tops North Kitsap, Port Angeles

SEQUIM — The Wolves continued their undefeated season with a season-best team total of 151 shots in a win against the Roughriders (also a season-low 188) and Vikings (208).

Sequim sophomore Blake Wiker earned medalist honors after posting a personal-best 2-under-par 34. Wolves freshman Andrew Vanderberg was second with a 38

Today Sequim hosted both North Kitsap &Port Angeles at The Cedars at Dungeness. It was supposed to be the 1st 18-hole match of the season, but due to darkness and a late start this year the teams could only finish nine holes.

Sequim continued their undefeated season with a season best of 151 (4 best scores). Port Angeles had their best game as well with a 188, and North Kitsap with a 208. Low honors go to Sequim Sophomore Blake Wiker with a Personal Best 2-under par 34. Sequim Freshman Andrew Vanderberg took second place with a 38, and the Wolves Josiah Carter tied for third with Port Angeles’ Mathew Locke after each shot 39.

It was a career-low round for Locke.

Paul Jacobsen rounded out the scoring for Sequim with a 40.

Logan Kovalenko shot 48, Parker Elias 50 and Cameron Fouts 51 for the Riders.

Sequim’s record is now 5-0 and face Kingston tomorrow at home.

Girls Tennis Port Angeles 5, North Mason 2

BELFAIR — The Roughriders swept all three singles matches to earn their first win of the season in a match against the Bulldogs.

Hailey Horton was named player of the match after winning her No. 2 singles contest 6-1, 6-0.

Port Angeles (1-3) hosts Bremerton (2-4) today.
