PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Sequim posts aces record in win

PA and Forks volleyball win; Riders fall in football game

SEQUIM — Sequim may have set or tied the school’s all-time service aces record in a 25-8, 25-15, 25-10 win over Bremerton on Thursday, according to longtime Sequim volleyball coach Jennie Weber Heilman.

“We had 28 aces which might be a team record or tied with a team record, at least with side-out scoring,” she said. “There was a state tournament game against Selah back in 2002 that went five sets and I think we had 27 aces.”

Weber Heilman said the winless Knights didn’t offer much fight.

“I was curious and we only received 23 [Bremerton] serves in three games, they were missing serves and we got some runs with aces,” she said.

“Arianna [Stoval] had a seven-point serving run in the first game and five were aces.” Stovall finished 14 of 18 on serves with 10 aces and a kill.

Sydney Hegtvedt also put together a seven-point run with three aces in the third game. Hegtvedt served 9 for 9 with one perfect pass.

Kendall Hastings had a good match, Weber Heilman said.

“Kendall was 8 of 8 on serve with five aces. She also had five perfect passes and considering we only passed 23 balls, that’s a good amount. Plus eight kills, two stuff blocks and four digs.

Jolene Vaara added two aces and five assists, while Sydney Clark served 10 for 10 with three aces and a pair of assists.

Sequim (4-2, 4-3) visits second-place Kingston (5-1, 5-2) on Tuesday.

Port Angeles 3, Bainbridge 1

BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders closed out the Spartans 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 27-25 on the road Thursday.

Lily Halberg led the way offensively, recording 17 of Port Angeles’ 43 total kills and six service aces. She also added 10 digs defensively.

Setter Josephine Edgington passed out 38 assists with eight service aces and 10 digs.

Cindy Liang led the team with 38 digs.

Ava Hairell totaled six kills, while Jasmine Messinger and Heidi Leitz added five apiece.

Port Angeles (4-2, 4-3) will compete at the Mark Morris invite in Longview today.

Forks 3, Ocosta 0

FORKS — The Spartans earned a 25-13, 25-21, 25-19 win over the Wildcats on Thursday.

“We were definitely playing our game against Ocosta,” team captain Kyra Neel and Kadie Wood said. “When our big middle [Kaidence Rigby] got injured we knew that we had to step it up even harder and we did, Brynn Daniels did an amazing job stepping up and playing hard.”

Forks coach Jenn Neal said she was proud of her squad for staying positive throughout the match.

“When Kaidence got hurt they all stepped up and worked together,” she said.

The Spartans (4-1, 5-3) visit Chief Leschi on Tuesday.

Football Olympic 42, Port Angeles 3

BREMERTON — Problems with punt snaps and pass coverage put the Roughriders in an early hole on the way to a road loss against the Trojans.

Olympic recovered a fumble on a punt snap on Port Angeles’ opening drive and quickly punched in a 4-yard rushing touchdown.

Two Trojans touchdown passes through the air led to a 21-0 deficit.

Later in the first quarter, Olympic picked up a punt snap fumble and returned it 2 yards for a 28-0 lead after the first quarter.

Port Angeles broke the shut out on Josiah Long’s 28-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The Riders (0-3, 1-4) host Bremerton (1-1, 3-1) on Friday.
