PORT ANGELES — The Sequim volleyball team locked up a postseason berth with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-22) rivalry sweep of Port Angeles.
The win put the Wolves (6-5, 8-5) in fourth place in the Olympic League 2A Division.
Strong service play by Sequim boosted the Wolves.
Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said five players on her team served 100 percent and the team served 94 percent as a whole.
Tayler Breckenridge led the Wolves with nine kills, 16 digs and three aces on 17 for 18 serving.
Brittney Gale served 19 for 20 with 12 assists and four kills, while fellow setter Calli Wiker had 20 assists, eight digs and four kills.
Isabelle Dennis had 14 digs and 10 perfect passes and Arlene Law served nine for nine with eight kills.
For the Roughriders, Devin Edwards had eight kills and Natalie Steinman led the team with 15 assists. Brennan Gray had 11 digs.
The Wolves wrap up their regular season Monday with a home match at 6:15 p.m. against second-place Bremerton. Though it is the final home match of the year, there will be no senior night as this young Wolves team has no seniors. Then, Sequim gets ready for the Olympic League 2A tournament which will be held at North Kitsap High School Saturday.
Port Angeles (0-12, 0-14) wraps up its season on the road at 6:15 p.m. Monday against North Kitsap.
Swimming
Port Angeles 139, Kingston 47
PORT ANGELES — In their final home swim meet of the year, the Port Angeles girls splashed past Kingston 139-47, winning 10 events and adding two more qualifiers to the district swim meet.
Erin Edwards had a particularly strong day Thursday, winning two individual events and being part of Port Angeles’ winning 200 medley relay team.
Ashley Seelye and Taylor Beebe were also part of two winning relay teams and won an individual event.
Winners were:
• 200 medley relay — Taylor Beebe, Nadia Cole, Felicia Che, Erin Edwards, 2:02.79.
• 200 freestyle relay — Ashlee Seelye, Kiara Schmitt, Brianna Tiemersma, Emma Murray, 1:56.08
• 400 freestyle relay — Seelye, Murray, Sierra Hunter, Beebe, 4:07.69.
• Edwards, 50 freestyle, 27.28; 100 freestyle, 1:00.16
• Cole, 200 individual medley, 2:24.34
• Seelye, 200 freestyle, 2:11.16
• Beebe, 100 backstroke, 1:08.02.
• Tana Hiigel, 100 breastroke, 1:20.86
• Cassii Middlestead, 1-meter diving, 246.60 points.
In addition, the Roughriders added two individual district qualifying times: Che qualified with a time of 28.28 in the 50 freestyle, good for second, while Murray finished the 100 freestyle in 1:00.74, good for third.
It was the final home meet for 10 Port Angeles seniors, who were recognized by the school. They are: co-captain Edwards, Kiara Amundson, Beebe, Hiigel, Gennie Litle, Bella Monger, and Jane Rudzinski and divers Lily Robertson (co-captain), Lum Fu and Cassii Middlestead.
Port Angeles’ (6-1, 7-2) next meet will be the 2A Divisional Invitational hosted by Port Angeles on Tuesday. Divers will be participating in an 11-dive format starting at noon. Swimming competition begins at 3:30 p.m. All eight Olympic League schools will participate.
Boys Tennis
Soule takes second
BREMERTON — Port Angeles’ Kenny Soule finished second at the Olympic League Boys Tennis Championship Thursday at Kitsap Athletic and Tennis Center after falling to North Kitsap’s Scott Lyons.
Soule advances to the West Central District Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday back in Bremerton, and he’ll be joined by fellow Roughrider Hayden Woods, who also booked a district spot by advancing to the semifinals. Woods will play a match Monday for third and fourth place when the tournament resumes.
After winning 15 straight singles matches, Woods lost his first match of the season to Lyon, but not before taking the first set Lyons has dropped all season in the semifinals.
“The level of play has been a treat to watch, and Scott Lyon made a point of saying his match with Hayden was the toughest he has faced all season,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said. “He was pushed to the limit. Simply great tennis was played in the Woods/Lyons match.
“Kenny got into the championship match by defeating Ian Schmid from Kingston in a three-set match. Ian has defeated Kenny in their two meetings during the season but Kenny had made a definite goal to me before the match that he was not to be denied a victory in this championship.
“Great, great tennis was played by both players and Kenny came out on top.”
Jadon Seibel in singles, and the doubles teams of Hunter Dougherty and Bo Bradow, Lucas Jarngagin and Milo Whitman and Brady Nickerson and Kyler Tourbin, all played terrific tennis according to Stockton.
“There is little doubt that there will be Roughriders charging through the Olympic League Championship [in] the years to come,” Stockton said.
