SEQUIM — After regulation and overtime ended in a scoreless draw, Sequim converted three penalty kicks to down North Kitsap in an Olympic League girls soccer match.
“It was an intense game,” Wolves coach Derek VanderVelde said.
“North Kitsap was relentless on their attack, but [we] were able to contain them with gritty play and a commendable display of determination on the field.
“There were several hard-hitting moments during the game and the girls kept fighting.”
“As a coaching staff we are extremely proud of these talented young ladies. They left their hearts on the field.”
Vandervelde said Cristina Williams, Claire Henninger, Chloie Sparks, Erin Vig, Jessica Deitzman had notable efforts on the field for Sequim (2-1, 4-2).
The Wolves visit Port Angeles (2-1, 3-2) on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at Civic Field.
Olympic 3, Port Angeles 2
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders fell to the first-place Trojans in a critical early-season Olympic League game.
Port Angeles, which hasn’t beaten Olympic in more 15 years, jumped out to a quick start when defender Kennedy Mason lofted a ball over the Olympic defense that Emily Boyd ran onto and placed past the Olympic goalie.
Stunned at the score, the Trojans furiously rallied, but the Riders withstood a barrage of four shots in as many minutes.
Boyd put Port Angeles up 2-0 in the 15th minute when Sierra Robinson placed a perfect pace between two defenders and Boyd took it at a full sprint, dribbled twice and notched her second goal of the game.
“We played great for the first 30 minutes,” Riders coach Scott Moseley said.
“Our weaknesses has been defensive lapses and that cost us in this game.”
Olympic made it 2-1 when Port Angeles failed to clear a ball in the final 10 yards that the Olympic League’s leading scorer, Hannah Troy, placed in goal.
The game seesawed back and forth with both teams getting shots but failing to convert. Riders’ midfielder Nicole Heaton sent in a scorching left-footed volley that the Olympic keeper grabbed while midfielder Leah Haworth’s incoming corner was barely tipped away.
The Trojans tied the game in the 51st minute after a scramble in front of the net, and took the lead with 90 seconds left in the game.
“We didn’t mark up at far post on a corner and they had an open look on goal with a header. It was a painful way to lose,” said Moseley.
Moseley singled out the play of goalie Madelyn Wenzl on the defensive end.
“Mads had a great game — sure hands, great diving saves and smart positioning.”
Moseley named Boyd as his offensive player of the game, Wenzl for her defense and Robinson and Taylar Clark for their work in transition.
“Clark played a complete game — offensively and defensively.”
The Riders host Sequim on Tuesday at Civic Field at 6:45 p.m.
Volleyball
Port Angeles wins pair
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders’ strong start to the season continued with sweeps against Bremerton and Olympic.
Port Angeles powered past the Knights 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 and held down the Trojans 25-21, 25-11, 25-13.
“I was a little nervous about this match [Olympic], because it’s homecoming week and the girls can get stretched too thin with all the activities,” coach Christine Halberg said.
“But they came out strong with their talk and energy and that set the tone for the night.”
Nizhoni Wheeler led the Riders with six kills and four blocks in the middle.
Aeverie Politika chipped in four kills for Port Angeles, while Alyssa Sweet and Kiana Robideau each had eight digs to keep balls in play.
Halberg liked what she saw in the Bremerton win, as well.
“Sets one and two were played strong and the girls played aggressively,” she said.
“They picked up a lot of digs and served consistently. They had one of their best blocking games. I’m proud of the girls for finishing in three [sets].
Robideau led the Riders with eight kills and also had eight digs.
Setter Callie Hall served a perfect 13 of 13, made two kills and posted 12 assists.
Wheeler had four kills, three aces and three blocks, one solo and two assisted.
Natalie Steinman notched four kills and nine digs, and Brennan Gray led the team in digs with 11.
Port Angeles (3-0, 4-0) hosts Sequim (2-1, 3-1) on Tuesday.
The Wolves lost to North Kitsap 25-10, 25-15, 25-20 on Thursday.
Quilcene unbeaten
QUILCENE — The Rangers stayed unbeaten on the season by picking up SeaTac League wins against Rainier Christian and Seattle Lutheran.
Quilcene rode past the Mustangs 25-6, 25-19, 25-11, and swept the Saints 25-12, 25-7, 25-16.
“We have some strong defense in Abby Weller and Katie Bailey, as well as continuing strong hitting from our outside hitters,” Rangers coach Joni Crowell said.
“We are working to improve the hitting skills of our younger players and they are rapidly improving. Middle Blocker McKenzie Kieffer is proving to be strong this year, and is joining her cousin Bailey Kieffer on the varsity. Our seniors continue to lead in strong serving, and Bailey Kieffer’s hitting on the right side is proving to be key to our offense.
“Our setter, Allison Jones, provides plenty of hitting opportunities with great sets hitting all of our hitters.”
Bailey Kieffer served 14 of 16 with four aces, eight kills and three digs against Rainier Christian.
Jones had 16 assists and two service aces in that win, while Love had aces on six of her 12 serves and made six kills.
Freshman Madison Coffey added six aces.
Against Seattle Lutheran, Emily Hitt had five kills, Bailey Kieffer added four kills and Jones three kills in the win.
Quilcene (4-0, 6-0) hosts Chimacum (0-1, 3-3) for a nonleague game at 5 p.m. Monday.
Girls Swimming
Port Angeles 123, North Kitsap 60
PORT ANGELES — Jaine Macias was a double-event winner for the Roughriders, earning a state-qualifying time with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 1.46 seconds and claiming the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.93.
Port Angeles (3-0, 4-0) stayed unbeaten and atop the Olympic League standings with the meet win.
The Riders placed first in seven swim and dive events and outpointed the Vikings in nine contests.
Macias also was part of Port Angeles’ winning 200 medley relay team (1:54.86) along with Kenzie Johnson, Felicia Che and Nadia Cole.
The foursome also won the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.29).
Che won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.94, and Johnson took the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.40.
Cassii Middlestead won the 1-meter dive with a score of 174.3 points.
Sierra Hunter won the 500 free (5:52.86).
Port Angeles visits Class 3A Bainbridge for a nonleague meet Tuesday.
