SEQUIM — Sequim senior Claire Henninger connected on a penalty kick in the 62nd minue to lift the Wolves to a 1-0 senior night girls soccer triumph over Bremerton.
[Our] first half was a bit sluggish,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said. [We] came out the second half on fire and dominated the Knights with relentless attacks on the goals.
“It was an impressive display of soccer as [we] were able to add another element to [our] game that had been waning in the second half of the season. Yana Hoesel, Mary McAleer and Tina Mingoy made some incredible attacking runs that allowed [us] to push numbers forward and threaten the Knights.”
Vander Velde also said Adare McMinn, Jillian Hutchison, Eden Johnson and Jessica Dietzman all played well.
The Wolves tallied 19 shots on goal in the game. Henninger made two saves in goal to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
Sequim (5-6-0, 8-7-0) visits Kingston (1-10-0, 2-12-0) today. The Wolves could tie for fourth in the Olympic League 2A Division with North Mason with a win over the Buccaneers and a North Mason loss to Port Angeles, but the Bulldogs would take the final district playoff seed in that scenario courtesy of two wins over second-place North Kitsap.
North Kitsap 3, Port Angeles 0
POULSBO — The Roughriders and Vikings clashed with second place on the line, but North Kitsap rode two first-half goals and added an insurance tally with 20 minutes left to earn the win.
“It was a big game and we didn’t live up to the billing,” said coach Scott Moseley. “A higher seed means an easier path to state but we’ve made that path a little more dificult.”
Moseley recognized the defensive efforts of Kennedy Mason and Cheyenne Wheeler. “Both players played tough defense especially in the second half as [we] were pressing for more offense.”
Port Angeles (7-4-0, 9-6-0) visit North Mason today with the third seed to the district playoffs up for grabs.
The Olympic League No. 3 seed will face the South Puget Sound League No. 4 at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The league’s No. 4 seed will face the SPSL’s No. 6 seed at Franklin Pierce at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Volleyball
Sequim 3, Bremerton 0
SEQUIM — Sequim got a bit of revenge for an earlier season loss on the road against second-place Bremerton with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 26-24) win over the Knights in Sequim.
Sequim had already qualified for the league tournament and the West Central 3 2A Tournament, but the win leaves them with a winning record in Olympic League 2A Division play (7-5). The Wolves tied with Kingston for third place, but will be a No. 4 seed in the league tournament because Kingston beat Sequim twice.
“Our girls really wanted to beat Bremerton,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.
Brittney Gale led the Wolves, serving 24 for 24 with seven aces, 14 assists and six digs. At one point, she served 10 straight points. Kalli Wiker had 12 assists and six digs. Bobbi Sparks served 12 for 12 with three aces and five digs, while Tayler Breckinridge was a power at the net as usual with 15 kills and 19 digs. Isabelle Dennis had eight digs and Latisha Robideau added six kills. Freshman Jayla Julmist added three kills.
The Wolves play at the league tournament Saturday at North Kitsap High School. The Wolves first play the No. 1 seed undefeated North Kitsap, then play a second match either for the tournament championship or for third place. Webber-Heilman said the North Kitsap match should start around 10:30 a.m. North Kitsap is the No. 4-ranked team in the state according to a Tacoma News-Tribune poll, so it would be nice for the Wolves to take a game or two from them.
The District 3 tournament begins Nov. 3 at Franklin Pierce High School.
North Kitsap 3, Port Angeles 0
POULSBO — The Roughriders (0-13, 0-15) ended their season with a 25-7, 25-9, 25-12 loss to the Olympic League-champion Vikings.
Madison Cooke led Port Angeles with three kills and Jaida Wood and Devin Edwards added two kills apiece.
Haley Becker led the team with eight digs, while Aeverie Politika chipped in with seven.

Riders, Wolves to districts
BREMERTON — Port Angeles and Sequim will be represented at the Class 2A West Central District Tournament at the Kitsap Tennis & Athletic Center this weekend after two Roughrider singles players and a Wolves’ doubles team qualified at the marathon Olympic League 2A Division tournament.
Port Angeles’ Hayden Woods knocked off Sequim’s Raymond Lam and Kingston’s Ian Schmid in the consolation bracket to join teammate Kenny Soule at the district tourney. Soule qualified for districts with a runner-up finish in the singles competition last Friday.
Lam is the first alternate to the district tournament.
“They elevated their games and played some outstanding tennis to earn the second and third-place finish in the 2A Olympic League tennis championship,” Riders coach Gil Stockton said. “They have both played some pretty impressive tennis. It will be interesting to watch them compete against the best from the SPSL this Friday and Saturday at the Kitsap Tennis Club in Bremerton.”
Sequim’s doubles duo of Blake Wiker and Thomas Hughes qualified for district play after finishing fourth in the Olympic League tourney.
The Wolves’ team of Tim Porter and Damon Little will serve as alternates at districts.
