BREMERTON — Sequim shut out Bremerton 1-0 in a road girls soccer match to put themselves in a two-way tie for second place in the Olympic League 2A Division.
Jessica Dietzman scored the lone goal of the game in the 39th minute.
“[We] totally dominated the game, out possessing the pressing the Knights into their own half the majority of the game,” said coach Derek Vander Velde. The Wolves had 15 shots, including 11 on-goal.
Vander Velde said notable players in the match were Nathalie Torres, Adare McMinn, Daisy Ryan and Olivia Hare.
Goalie Claire Henninger picked up the shutout, making five saves. It was the fourth shutout in the past five games for Henninger and the Wolves. In fact, they have allowed just two goals in their past six games.
The win puts Sequim at 4-2 with 12 points, tied with Port Angeles (North Kitsap is also 4-2, but won one of their games in a shootout and has 11 points … but also holds a tiebreaker over Port Angeles.). Port Angeles has the head-to-head tiebreaker with a win over Sequim, but the Wolves get another crack at the Roughriders at Civic Field on Oct. 19.
First, Sequim (4-2, 6-3) hosts first-place Olympic at 6:45 p.m. today.
Volleyball
Bremerton 3, Sequim 1
BREMERTON — The Sequim volleyball girls have their backs up against the wall for making the postseason after a 3-1 loss to second-place Bremerton on the road that was closer than the score shows.
The match could have gone either way as the Knights won 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19.
“It went right down to the wire every game,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman. “In that last game, they got too much of a lead to close to the end.”
The loss means the Wolves may have to win out to make postseason, Webber-Heilman said. Sequim is 3-4 in league in fifth place, one game behind fourth-place North Mason and Kingston. Only four teams in the Olympic League 2A Division go to the league tournament. The bad news is the Wolves have lost twice to Kingston. The good news is they have beaten North Mason and get to play them again.
Tayler Breckinridge had a huge match with 14 kills, 22 digs and serving 16 for 16. Libero Isabel Dennis had 20 digs, setter Brittney Gale had 15 assists and “was playing great defense,” said Webber-Heilman with 18 digs. Bobbi Sparks also had nine digs, some of which were spectacular Webber-Heilman said. Setter Kalli Wiker had 13 assists. Lindsey Leader had six kills and served 13 for 14.
Sequim (3-4, 4-4) hosts Olympic at 6:15 p.m. today.
North Kitsap 3, Port Angeles 0
PORT ANGELES — A Vikings win over the Roughriders has Port Angeles still looking for its first Olympic League 2A Division win.
First-place North Kitsap won 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-10) in Tuesday’s match. Coach Christine Grunch Halberg said the Riders played well early and had a 16-14 lead at one point in the first set.
“The girls played tough. [They] blocked well. Hit well. Passed well. Best of all they played with energy, excitement and celebration for each play. It was great to see them have fun,” Halberg said.
Devin Edwards led the Riders with four kills, while Natalie Steinman had seven assists and Lainnie Lyamba had seven digs. Michelle Alvarez had two aces.
Port Angeles (0-8, 0-9) hosts Coupeville in a nonleague match at 5 p.m. today.
Quilcene 3, PSAA 0
KIRKLAND — The undefeated Rangers volleyball squad had to work for this one, fighting off a tough Puget Sound Adventist team to stay all alone in first place in the Sea-Tac 1B League.
Quilcene won 3-0, but two of the games were close (25-21, 25-20, 25-10).
“[Puget Sound Adventist] had very strong defense and a strong outside hitter Emi Bezman. Our right sides quickly keyed in on her and put down a lot of blocks, shutting down much of their offense,” said coach Joni Crowell.
Emily Hitt had 13 kills, six digs and three blocks, while Katie Love served 23 for 24 with eight kills and eight digs.
Setter Allanah Carron had 14 assists and nine digs while serving 10 for 11 and Abbygael Weller had a good all-around game with 14 digs, five kills and three aces on nine for 10 serving. McKenzie Kieffer had six blocks and Libero Pearl Munn served 10 for 10 with six digs.
“The Rangers continued to use their options, with the Right sides stepping up and starting to hit more. Setting was strong and the team passing is much better,” said Crowell.
If Puget Sound Adventist had won, the Sharks would have forced a tie for first place.
Quilcene (7-0, 10-0) next plays Christian Faith at home at 6 p.m. today.
