SEQUIM — The Sequim girls soccer team eked out an important point in a 1-1 (4-1) penalty-kick shootout loss to Class 3A Bainbridge on Tuesday.
“They are really solid, and it was a fun match to be a part of,” Wolves coach Ken Garling said. “Girls on both sides fought hard and did well.”
Sequim nearly gave up a goal in the game’s early moments.
“In the fifth minute, we fouled a Bainbridge player in the box and she kicked the penalty kick over the bar, so we survived that early scare,” Garling said.
“We came in about the 30th minute and Hannah Wagner got us a goal, and we were ahead for the rest of the first half and a big chunk of the second.”
Bainbridge equalized in the 61st minute.
“They were able to break through and beat our defender up their right side, and they were able to slot one in past our keeper,” Garling said.
The game remained a draw through the next 20 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods before heading to a penalty-kick shootout.
“They made theirs, and we couldn’t quite make ours,” Garling said.
“We work on penalty kicks in training, so we will provide some reminders on how to pick your spots, stepping up to the line and having confidence. The girls know that, if this comes up, we need to be prepared, because it’s pretty likely we will have another shootout this season.”
Garling said Rileigh Van Dyken was active and involved in the midfield.
“Defensively, our No. 6, Rileigh Van Dyken, was just outstanding in controlling the midfield,” Garling said. “Bainbridge was trying to slot through balls to their forwards, and she sat back and played those passing lanes any time they tried to feed their striker. She was just going back and forth and side to side, taking away those options. And she took some free kicks for us as well.”

POULSBO — The Roughriders allowed an early penalty-kick goal in the eighth minute that stood up for the duration in a road loss Tuesday.
“They made a really good pass and, as our goalie Saylah Commerton slid out to get the ball, she took out the NK player,” coach Scott Moseley said
“They really possessed the ball well; they had the majority of possession. Our goalie, Saylah, did have two really good saves, one tipping the ball over the bar and the other diving.”
Moseley said Port Angeles tried out a new formation in the first 15 minutes of the game before going to its original setup.
“We quickly switched back to our old formation because it wasn’t working out. And then the game really stabilized after that.
“We were able to get some offense going forward, defense was more solid and midfield was better.”
Piper Williams and Bailee Larson had good shots on goal saved by the Vikings keeper.
“The positive from this is, through three games, we have only allowed one goal in the run of play,” Moseley said. “We still have a solid defense, but we have to figure out some things on offense.”
Port Angeles (3-1) hosts Bainbridge today.
